Working so hard!
A Peek at our Week
Writing: Our writers are learning how to bring their stories to life! They are working on making their chaThis week, writers studied our mentor text Night of the Veggie Monster to see what the author George McClements did to make his book special. He used ellipses (...) to build excitement in his story. He also told his story in exact actions across the pages. This helps the reader make a movie in their mind as they read. Finally, the author used pop out words to encourage the reader to read those words with a strong voice. Our young writers are trying out these craft moves in their stories! Next week, we will look at other authors to see how they made their writing special. We are wrapping up our unit on personal narratives and will be celebrating our hard work with our friends soon!
Math: This week, we began working with subtraction. Students learned that subtraction and addition are related and can be formed using the same number bond. We practiced writing subtraction number sentences using a number bond, then flipping it into a related addition sentence. We also began solving subtraction number stories by drawing a picture, writing a number bond, and a number sentence. We will continue with a variety of subtraction number stories next week.
Word Study: This week was a review of all of our short vowel sounds. We practiced reading and writing CVC words, both in isolation and in context using some short vowel passages. Next week, we will continue to review short vowels, before getting ready to move on to blends and digraphs.
