Great Things Happening in our Classrooms at South Middle School!
Depth of Knowledge
What is Depth of Knowledge, and how does it apply to rigor in the classroom? The word "rigor" is an educationally-based word that is bandied about, but what does it really mean to incorporate rigor into our classroom? Teachers and students might think that rigor simply means piling on more work. Part of the problem is that we have adopted the verbage without really understanding what it means. For classroom teachers, the more important issue at stake is one of practice. How do we create rich environments where all students learn at their highest levels? One useful tool, Norman Webb's Depth of Knowledge Levels, can help teachers meet that challenge. Depth of Knowledge (DoK) categorizes tasks according to the complexity of thinking required to successfully complete them.
Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities
“Today’s students cannot be prepared for the competitive jobs of the future if they do not actively participate in the creation of their own learning and build skills that will translate into the flexibility needed for success in the workforce.” Content Does Not Change Behavior addresses the professional learning of teachers and how that is shifting to creating their own learning to deepen their knowledge and meet their needs.
