Mrs. Barrett's Team Adventures
September 12, 2016
Hello UMAC Families,
It was wonderful to see so many of you Thursday evening for Parent Night. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come learn more about what your child will be doing in UMAC this year. As I shared with you, I am very excited for this year. My team is awesome and they have already proven themselves to be hard workers and motivated learners!
I hope you have a great week ahead!
Sincerely,
Michelle Barrett
Time for MAP testing!
It’s time for our Fall MAP Testing (Measure of Academic Progress). As teachers, we use this test to help find student's instructional level in reading and math. It also helps us measure your child’s growth within the school year, as well as year to year. Our team will take the tests on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 11:40-12:30 pm. It is very helpful if all students are here on these two days.
Traits vs. Emotions
While reading Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, our students analyzed character traits and emotions. Character’s emotions change frequently and are a response to actions around them. Character traits are what we learn about a character based on what he/she says, does, thinks, and feels. This text also provided our team the opportunity to discuss the importance of positive thinking and being confident.
MATH
New friends: Our new friends will be reviewing and analyzing different methods of addition and subtraction. However, we will be using the traditional method in class. As we shared with you, please continue to have your child practice their math facts daily.
Old friends: Our 5th grade mathematicians have been learning about equivalent fractions. Students are learning how to simplify (n-group) and unsimplify (n-split) fractions. Some key vocabulary words that we have been reviewing are factors, multiples, and prime/composite numbers. Ask your mathematician to show you what they know by “teaching” these key terms to you.
