Building a College Going Culture
Preparation is the Key to Success
Creating a college-going culture means explaining the benefits of higher education to students and instilling in them the skills they will need to navigate the path to college completion. What does it mean for students to be College and Career Ready? It is no longer enough for schools to just teach students reading, writing, and arithmetic. Schools are expected to prepare students for their post-secondary pursuits but what does that mean? Whether students will enter the workforce or choose to enter a two or four year college, they will need to be able to read, write, perform computations with numbers but most of all they will need to be able to think analytically and logically. We live in an age of rapid change and instant information so students need to be able to organize and prioritize tasks which requires self-management. So what are we doing at LEHS to prepare our students for their college and career choices?
Next week on Wednesday, October 16th, we have activities planned for all grade levels that will provide experiences that build students preparedness for their future choices. Freshmen will be going on a college tour where they will hear an admissions presentation, tour a campus, hear about college life, and even eat in the college cafeteria. As Freshmen, it is important for students to begin thinking about what they want to do after high school so that as they choose their high school courses and establish their academic record, they are setting the foundation for what comes next. We hope their college tour will provide them a glimpse of what could be in their future.
Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16th. The Preliminary SAT, generally known as the PSAT, is a test given by College Board with the participation of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Strong PSAT scores can lead to scholarships and help students prepare for the SAT exam. As Sophomores, students take the PSAT for the first time and their results provide the information needed to prepare for their Junior year when their PSAT results can lead to recognition and scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Seniors will be headed out into our community to spend the day giving back through community service. Whether students are applying to college, seeking a scholarship, or building a resume for a future job, community service is a great resume builder. A national study of service learning programs indicates that students who participate in community service projects while in high school also have higher grades, better attendance, and develop personal and social responsibility.
Regardless of the post-secondary choices that our graduates make, it is our job to make sure that all doors are open to our students and ultimately that we have prepared them to be successful in all of their post-secondary pursuits. In the words of Alexander Graham Bell “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.

High school students often do not want to participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program is the standard used by many programs to qualify students for financial assistance. Even if a student never uses their eligibility in the lunchroom, they can benefit greatly in other areas if they qualify for the Lunch Program. Eligibility has to be reestablished each year. You can fill out the application here. We highly suggest that all families fill out an application to see if you qualify.

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
