Kids' Connection Summer Information
We will start enrolling for our summer program beginning April 15th thru May 17th. The handbook and registration form are on our website, http://smcsc.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=229084&pageId=893294. We create several positive experiences for children such as weekly field trips, swimming at Brown Pool, play at the park, make crafts and play lots of fun games. We are open 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will be meeting at Pendleton Primary this summer. Be sure to join us for a fun filled summer.
School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
This week our Project Care focus was on how to use good manners when someone says something that seems hurtful. It is easy to have good manners when other people say nice things but it is a challenge for students to be nice and use good manners when the people around them are grumpy or irritable. In a school as large as Pendleton Elementary there will be students each day that are in good moods while other students may be angry, worried, tired, or frustrated. So what can a student do when someone is grumpy and responds to them in a mean way that hurts their feelings?
- They should stop and think before they answer back. If they respond meanly back it will not makes things better.
- They should say something neutral like. “You don’t seem yourself today. That comment seemed kind of mean and hurtful. I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way. Hope your day gets better.”
- If they are too hurt or upset to know what to say, they shouldn’t say anything and should just walk away.
- They should always give someone personal space and understanding when they are having an irritable day. Sometimes all that person may need is a ½ hour, ½ day, or a few days to calm down. They should try to just give them space during this time.
- They should always use positive self-talk to feel better. They should say things like, “I won’t let that comment ruin my day. She is probably upset about something not related to me.”
- They should find an activity that they can do that will be a distraction until they feel better.
Getting along with others means that students should make the choice to use good manners even when someone else doesn’t. Please follow-up at home with this message by discussing the following question with your student: How can you help out a friend who is in a grumpy mood and seems to direct their bad mood towards others?
Until next week....
