News from the Music Room
The title of the final unit of study in music class is Expressive Elements. This unit gets into all facets of music education that center around musical expression, and a general feeling of personal expressiveness towards the arts. We will begin by moving to some different genres of music, followed by a brief discussion as to what musical elements make the music sound different. This discussion reviews the steady beat and rhythm unit, melody/harmony unit, accompaniment unit, instrument family and sound production unit, as well as the concepts learned surrounding the concert preparation and performance. Next, students will listen and move to music with many different tempo movements. This will lead right into learning and experiencing a wide variety of musical dynamics within musical styles from many areas across the globe. Finally, students will have a week where they specifically learn about music and culture from Mexico. Students will play instruments, dance, learn musical games, create artwork, sing and listen to music from Mexico. Musical mood, feeling, and individual interest in varying genres of music will be incorporated throughout this unit. Thank you for a wonderful year in music!

Free & Reduced Lunch
Why was my child able to receive free lunch and breakfast?
Starting in 2019, due to the pandemic, congress, through the USDA, implemented a program, Universal Free Lunch, to provide free breakfast and lunch to students K-12.
The USDA has extended that program through the end of 2022.
At this time we do not know if the program will be extended for next year.
How is the Universal Free Lunch different then the Free and Reduced program for public schools?
The Free and Reduced program is based on income. The Free and Reduced program must be applied for every year. This means a student that qualified for Free and Reduced this year will NOT automatically qualify next year.
If your family qualifies, fees will be reduced or waived in addition to breakfasts and lunches.
The school district cannot approve an application. Only the state can qualify a family.
NOTE: If you qualify for Direct Certification, you do not need to fill out a Free/Reduced form. Direct Certification comes directly from the state. (Medicaid, foster, snap etc.)
Why should I apply for Free and Reduced when I am getting free lunches already and when can I apply?
Getting free breakfasts and lunches is a federal decision and has NO impact on school fees.
The forms that need to be filled out for the 2022-2023 school year have not been released by the State of Illinois. This usually happens in July. We will send a communication to all parents when we know the program is opened by the state.
Approval is not retroactive. For example, if you are approved in December, you will still be responsible for fees incurred from August-December.
What Now?
Look for communication from the Sandwich School District over the summer. After the program opens, we will let you know through an email and placement on our website.
