Inspiring the Adventure of Learning

October 2, 2019

Wild and Free Conference is coming to California!

I am so excited to offer this to our families! April 30th will be a one-day school-wide conference offered only to Inspire schools. It will be all the same speakers and all the same feel for a fraction of the cost. All ticket orders can be placed through the EOS. Please spread the word ASAP as these conferences tend to sell out within a few weeks. The standard conference will begin selling tickets next week so it's important our families know about our Inspire reduced rate first because all tickets are non-refundable!

MLK Contest

The theme for our 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Essay, and Speech Contests has been released! We encourage students to participate in all of the competitions for which their grade level is designed (Art: Grades K-12; Essay and Speech: Grades 4-12). Your students will be basing their projects on the following theme:

The Dream 2020: The Future Begins Today

Please refer to the attached prompt for a detailed description of the focus of this year’s theme. Please visit our website at mlk.fcoe.org to register and to find more information on contest rules.

Thank you for making it possible for your students to participate! Please forward this email to any other teachers you feel would be interested in having students compete in the contests.

Community Connections

Big picture

All Central Community Connections events are listed on Inspiration Station but may feel tricky to find sometimes. Using the search box will help you narrow down your search tremendously. Families can also visit our Central CA Parent Resource Site to find CC events right HERE.

We also have a monthly newsletter that is sent by the local Community Coordinators and then posted to a variety of websites for families. Here is the parent Community Connections site and this is just another option to FIND the FUN!

If you would like to receive a monthly newsletter from the Community Coordinator in your area you are in luck!

Student Spotlight

Donevan Habecker - 8th Grade

I love doing art because it is calming to me and it gives me a nice break from things like schoolwork. I have not yet settled on an art medium, so I experimented with a lot of different styles, such as clay, sketching, painting, woodworking, and cardboard sculpting. This may come as a surprise but I once thought art was boring. I got good because of practicing around 3 to 11 hours a day. My main source of learning this is YouTube. I am still practicing and improving every day.

Max Kelly- Kindergarten

Max built a Robot Commander he built with his dad, Ryan. It has a rotating head, eyes that light up, the mouth opens and closes, the hands and arms move, and it turns at the waist. It was built a body part at a time over several weeks with a Robotix kit. Next, they hope to use a Robotix computer to program it to do multiple coordinated movements together.

Lending LIbrary

Have you visited our Lending Library? Or, have you ever browsed the Lending Library online and reserved items?

We are aware that many families are waiting for curriculum orders to be processed, and the Lending Library may be just the resource you need to borrow curriculum and educational activities to use with your children while you wait.

Our friendly and helpful Lending Librarians, Jill Johnson and Debbie Kimzey are more than willing to help you in any way they can!

The nearest Lending Library to most of our students in Yosemite Valley Charter School and Monarch River Charter School is in Fresno. For students living in Monterey or San Benito counties, items requested online can be picked up at the Lending Library Truck visit. Details about Library Locations and Drop Offs can be found here.

Add/Drop Deadline is October 18th

Community College courses must be listed in Pathways and an MA Addendum completed by 10/18. Please check in with your students taking community college courses that Proof of Enrollment has been sent to their counselor. Students need to have these courses added by an MA addendum by Oct. 18th in order to receive high school credit for the class. Thank you for your diligence!

College application season is in full swing! As part of the application process, most 4-year colleges/universities require a student to take either the SAT or ACT. If your student plans to apply for admission to a 4-year college for the Fall of 2020 and has not yet taken the SAT, please register ASAP! The regular registration deadline for the November 2 SAT is fast-approaching. In order to avoid the increased cost of late registration, please be sure to register for the SAT prior to October 3.

HS students who would like a Fee Waiver for SAT testing should direct their request to their HS Counselor. For students in Yosemite Valley Charter and Monarch River Academy, the counselor is Carmen Marroquin. She can be reached at cmarroquin@inspireschools.org or 209-720-7177.
