GL Staff Pilot Blackboard Mass Communication Tool

Glennwood staff will be the first in the district to pilot the Blackboard Mass Communication Tool for text messaging. (Currently, only the administrators and communication personnel at schools use this tool.) Our hope is that parents will appreciate having this type of communication with their child's teacher for more frequent and precise messaging.

Note: If you are not receiving Blackboard communications (texts, school and district newsletters and emails), your preferred mobile number and email may need to be updated. Please contact Mrs. Hearn, our school manager at khearn@csdecatur.net. Also, be sure to check your spam folder if you are not receiving our newsletter.

Caution: If you unsubscribe or opt-out, you will no longer receive communications from staff except emergency communication.

We will begin offering this service for classroom teachers the week of August 30th. After a few weeks of practice, we'll be looking for some feedback from you so that the district may evaluate if this communication tool will be used with all school staff going forward. Our goal remains to provide clear and concise communication with our families.

Media Center Birthday Book Fundraiser - Deadline is Aug. 27

In your child's folder last week, you received information about participating in the Birthday Book Program as a fundraiser for the media center. This is a special way to honor your child during their birthday month and also help the library grow the collection of books. This is usually the biggest fundraiser we do, and due to last year's circumstances, we were unable to offer this program/fundraiser. We would really appreciate your support if you are able to donate this year. Forms and payment are by Friday, August 27. If you did not receive the form, you will find it here: Birthday Book Program. Thank you for supporting the Glennwood Media Center.

Last week and this week, I have been introducing myself to the students. Rather than explain my role as a school counselor, we have played fun games and read a story so that students can get to know me and what it is I do. I always tell the students that as their school counselor, I am here to keep them happy, healthy, and safe. I also showed the students (1st and 2nd grade) how they can reach out to me via my school counselor student referral form available on the Glennwood Symbaloo Page (the red person with the white heart!) I will continue to remind and show this to students as one potential way to reach out to me if they need to talk. Beginning next week, I will start classroom lessons on school readiness. I will share more next week. Additionally, please see the below CSD-sponsored student mental health event.

News from the Decatur Education Foundation

Homework Help: We are continuing our Virtual Pals tutoring program in which we pair a 2nd-8th grade student with an upper high school student or adult volunteer to help with homework, time management, and motivation. If you would like to sign your student up for the program, you can go here. If you would like to help as a volunteer tutor, you can apply here. (High school students can earn volunteer hours!)

Could you be a mentor? We’re also seeking 15 women and 15 men volunteers to serve as mentors for our AIM Scholars mentoring program. Third-grade students are paired with an adult mentor who helps them by supporting their Academics and explore their Interests; Mentors also help their students connect to educational and enrichment opportunities. For just 2-4 hours per month, you can have a meaningful impact in the life of a student. For more information, please visit www.decatureducationfoundation.org/mentoring
