Identifying & Managing Your Child's Stress

What is Stress?

A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.

synonyms: strain, pressure, (nervous) tension, worry, anxiety, trouble, difficulty

Common Sources of Childhood Stress

Childhood stress is often caused by a reaction to outside sources such as family, friends, or school. It can also come from the child themselves. It can stem from what they should be doing versus what they are actually able to do.

Symptoms of Stress

  • Anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Clinginess
  • Crying, whining
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Regression {thumb sucking, hair twirling}

Keep Healthy Stress from Becoming Distresss

  • Spend time with your children.
  • Give your kids a stable home environment. Negotiate home rules -- including consequences for rule breaking -- and stick to these rules.
  • Monitor their eating habits.
  • Don't just talk to your kids. Communicate with them. When children misbehave -- and they will -- try to understand their behavior instead of merely punishing it.
