Beginning with Romanesque Art
Ending the Week with Gothic Art
A New and Improved Unit Sheet
The Unit Sheet has underwent a huge makeover for Unit 11 (hence the hold up). The basic elements are still present: context, works of art, and readings. Vocabulary, characteristics by type of artwork have now been included. Please review the information carefully before reading Gardner's and attending class. I think this will be beneficial to all of you as we move forward into periods of art that are defined by stylistic elements versus geographic locations.
Continuing Our Study of Romanesque Art
Romanesque style was the first to permeate all of continental Europe, beginning in 1000 CE and lasting until 1200 CE. Romanesque style is so named because it is reminiscent of Roman style, particularly architecture. Romanesque style is so named because it is reminiscent of Roman style, particularly architecture. It retains the round arches, barrel vaults, apses, and acanthus-leaf decoration, but it was also influenced by Byzantine anti-classical decoration and the complex designs of the Medieval period.
Romanesque art is awkward. It's clunky and clumsy. Romanesque art just...isn't quite there yet. During this period, churches began to be built entirely from stone to help create a lasting and permanent structure that wouldn't burn to a crisp at the drop of a match. While fireproof, these structures were also heavy—not to mention heavy looking. Little light was able to pass through small windows, so interiors were generally very dim and lit with candles. Luckily, this created a more pious and meditative atmosphere.
