Mr. Aleman's Monday Mail
Where you know what we know so we all know
Week of December 1, 2014
Quote of the Week
"Every great man is always being helped by everybody, for his gift is to get good out of all things and all persons." -John Ruskin
Math
As we approach the end of the first semester, we are working on the last few standards we need to cover before the benchmark in January. This week we begin a quick unit on STRIP DIAGRAMS and FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS. Your child should be able to use a strip diagram to determine which type of math is needed to solve. We should also be able to solve equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Finally, we will work on relating decimals to fractions that name tenths and hundredths.
Science
We will begin a unit on FORCE and MOTION. This week we will discuss the forces of GRAVITY, MAGNETISM, and FRICTION. Gravity is the force that holds us to the earth. Magnetism is the force that draws metals containing iron towards a magnet. Friction is the force created when two objects rub against one another. We will be working through various labs to explore these forces.
Announcements
- Homework for the week looks a bit different but not much. DAILY RIGOR 6 is the same type of worksheet we've been doing. It's a great review of things we've covered, are covering, or will cover. Remember to turn that in to Edmodo. We also tore out workbook pages this week for some practice with word problems. MOTIVATION MATH 62 and 190 are also due by Friday. We will be grading those together, so please make sure to have those completed by then. Since there is only one workbook per child, I do not have copies of the homework. It is expected that your child is responsible for the homework assigned. I will not be able to provide extra copies of workbook pages.
There will be NO SECOND TUESDAY for the month of December.
