TOMS Shoes and Eyewear

Created by Blake Mycoskie

In 2006, Blake Mycoskie went to Argentina and befriended village children. He noticed that they did not have adequate footwear to support their feet on the dirty and hard ground. He felt that these children deserved to have their feet protected by shoes, and a great quality shoe at that.

TOMS Shoes was created later that year. He created it so that they could use the one for one method. This means that for every shoe that they sold, another pair was given to a child in need of footwear. Five years later, in 2011, TOMS expanded their company and their one for one method, and TOMS Eyewear was created. TOMS has given more than 10 million pairs of new shoes to children in need and helped restore sight to over 200,000 people.

How are we similar? How are we different?

Blake Mycoskie and I are similar in many ways. We have seen problems in the world and have wanted to make a change. When I was four I moved to London with my family and we lived there for 4 1/2 years. While we were there, we travelled all over Europe, Asia, and Africa seeing key cities and places. These cities are very different from the cities in America. Half of the citizens are impoverished and these people are scattered around the city begging for help or money. Yes, America does have poverty and homeless people asking for money, but not to the extent that these cities in Africa and Asia do. As a kid, I wanted to help these people by giving them money. Blake Mycoskie also wanted to help, so he created TOMS. Blake Mycoskie and I are different because he did something to help the people in need. However, I never did. He created an organization and business that would aid children of the world that needed him. On the other hand, I only pondered the idea of making the world a better place.
