It's been a great start to 4th grade! We are looking forward to a wonderful year, full of learning and fun!

Reading Workshop

Readers are learning about routines and expectations in the 4th grade reading workshop. Our first few weeks focus on building a reading life. The reading expectation for at home minutes is 20-25 minutes each night. It is not surprising that kids become better readers when they not only practice at school, but also at home. Please refer to the anchor chart regarding using THINK marks in reading. Our hope is that all kids will find a love for reading this year!

Language Workshop

Language Workshop is off to a great start with deep discussion and lots of work in our Thoughtful Logs. Our first unit is “Community”, and the essential question is, “How can diversity impact community?” We have already read and analyzed two books in the last two weeks; Hands Around the Library and Four Feet, Two Sandals. We will read several more books before we finish Unit 1.

Writing Workshop

Essential Question: How do myths, that have been passed down from generation to generation, impact a community?

We are just starting our myth writing unit! This unit will focus on learning about myths from various cultures and how to write a myth. Students are also sharing their myths globally through Penpal Schools. We will have digital pen pals through PenPal Schools. Penpal Schools connects over 100,000 students in more than 170 countries to learn together! They will collaborate through high-quality online courses to learn about cultures, perspectives, and global challenges while practicing language and technology skills. Please have your child share what they are writing about in class!!

Math Workshop

New 4th grade mathematicians have been adjusting to math workshop and the growth mindset idea that everyone is born a mathematician. They have been hard at work extending number and shape patterns, determining a rule to a pattern and sharing special features of number and shape patterns. Math terms that we will continue to review are “multiples” and “factors”. Next week mathematicians will have their first math assessment in patterning as well as a district benchmark common assessment on one and two step problem solving.

We have started our first science unit of the year. We are learning about Earth & Human Activities! Our essential questions include: How and why is Earth always changing? What relationship do people have with the effects of weathering or rate of erosion by water, wind, ice or vegetation? What relationship do individual communities have with protecting the Earth’s resources and environment?

This week, Waukesha County came to school to do a program on Healthy Soils and Composting. The activities completed in class, along with the Healthy Soils Program, are getting us ready for our field trip next week to Lapham Peak.

We will be starting Coding Fridays this year where we will have opportunities to try different coding activities. This will take place two times per month. See the document below for more information about code.org.
