Principal's Message
Last week we saw rising COVID-19 case numbers at Meridian High School which had some people asking why Meridian High is staying open. Last Friday, Dr. Everett provided information about schools remaining open and new Department of Health regulations. If you haven't read it already, I have provided a link for you here:
If you didn't receive the message in your email, please let me know as Dr. Everett provides information in this format fairly regulary, and I want to make sure you have that information.
The changes in our COVID procedures come as we near the end of the semester. Including Tuesday, there are six days remaining in this semester. This week, students will have time available during the school day in T3 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students can also get support after school in the Trojan Learning Center those same days. In anticipation of a final push to complete work and improve grades, T3 will also be offered on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
Speaking of next week, the last day of the semester will be Tuesday, January 25th. School is closed on Wednesday to allow for teachers to prepare for second semester. Thursday, January 27th will be our first day of second semester. Students will go to school all six periods on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A schedule will be provided in next week's newsletter and found on the MHS website.
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Go Trojans.
Derek O. Forbes

Teacher Feature - Science Department
Fred Wiley
Mr. Wiley has worked at Meridian for two years, teaching chemistry and physics. He says that his favorite thing about teaching at Meridian is the positive culture of the school. It also doesn’t hurt that he lives nearby. He believes that people need to know how fun and cool science is. His favorite thing about teaching is seeing the kids getting excited about the subject they’re learning. He used to be a part of an educated migrant camp where he taught kids English. He’s also a contractor in the summer. His favorite free time activities include mountain biking and triathlons. He used to do them often before Covid-19. Mr. Wiley is also the advisor of the newly formed cornhole club. He has a cat and dog, his dog's name is Luna and his cat's name is Heisenberg. He has two sons, one’s a firefighter and one's a chef. Mr. Wiley’s highlights from working at Meridian is meeting Leroy Bell, because he was the one who introduced him to Sea Shanty’s. So shout out to Leroy Bell for that.
Students say that their favorite thing about Mr. Wiley is “his personality, specifically his enthusiasm,” “he explains thoroughly and effectively” and is “very entertaining and has a good sense of humor.”
