The Healing Children and Adolescents through Creativity: Art Therapy Training Workshop
A training event for professionals in mental health, medicine and education. Sponsored by the North Dakota Council on the Arts in cooperation with Missouri River Educational Cooperative
This workshop reviews the basic principles and practice of art therapy, art therapeutic assessments and creative interventions for the treatment of depression, anxiety, acting-out behaviors, ADHD, anger management and low self-esteem. When children and adolescents suffer from depression, abuse, trauma or medical stress art expression is a natural way to communicate difficult feelings.
No prior experience with art materials is necessary!
Workshop Goals:
- Introduction to the field of art therapy.
- Outline the history of art therapy highlighting key contributors to the field.
- Explain the underlying principles of art therapy.
- Outline the components an art therapy course of treatment.
- Experience art materials through art therapeutic processes.
- Experience non-directive and directive evaluation and treatment approaches.
- Illustrate art therapy principles and practice by reviewing six case studies of clients and their art therapeutic course of treatment.
- Demonstrate the use of metaphor and healing stories in art therapy.
- Present art therapeutic interventions to improve the client's self-esteem, increase insight, decrease trauma and acting-out behaviors.
- Review forensic art therapy evaluation techniques for suspected child sexual abuse.
- Review the importance of object relations, art making and expression.
- Understand issues involving the interpretation of client's art.

MREC Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be submitted no later than 7 calendar days prior to event for a refund. Phone cancellations are not accepted. Registrations are transferrable. A processing fee of 25% of the registration cost with a minimum fee of $10 will be applied to the refund. No refunds for online courses, nonattendance, or cancellations submitted one to six days prior to the event. Participants will receive a full refund for events cancelled by Missouri River Educational Cooperative (MREC).

Catherine Rogers Jonsson is a registered board certified art therapist (ATR-BC, #92-201) with the American Art Therapy Credentials Board and a credentialed international member of the American Art Therapy Association. She is a graduate of Columbia University in NYC (School of the Arts, MFA: Visual Art) and the University of Wisconsin-Superior (MA: Art Therapy).

Experience:
Catherine has 26 years of clinical art therapy experience and offers a mixture of creativity, humor, dynamic teaching and compassionate insights to her training workshops.
Catherine currently offers art therapy treatment in Lidköping, Sweden for refugees, asylum seekers and new permanent residents from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan.
Catherine is also a professional artist based in Sweden with numerous solo and group exhibitions to her credit in the US and Europe. Her figurative paintings and drawings are concerned with contemporary issues in spirituality and philosophy.

Scribbles Art Therapy Cards© were created more than 25 years ago by Catherine Rogers Jonsson for use in her art therapy sessions in psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers and in private practice. Originally the cards were just simple index cards kept together with a rubber band!
Now the cards have symbolic images and prompts for easy use.
