Chapman Family Weekly Update
November 9, 2019
Good afternoon Chapman Families! Thank you so much for all of the kind words and support that have been sent my way the last couple of days. I am really going to miss all of our students and families. This will be my last family newsletter for the Chapman community, but Mrs. Ferguson will pick up where I left off and will continue to communicate with a weekly newsletter.
PTO Meeting this Tuesday (November 12th) at 6 PM. We will have Sarah and Anthony from the Guidance Center as guests to present to parents on trauma. This will also be an opportunity to meet Mrs. Ferguson as she will also be joining us.
Coffee with the Principals: Please join Mrs. Ferguson and me for Coffee with the Principals Thursday at 9 AM. We would love to enjoy coffee, treats and conversation with you all. This is one of my favorite events of the month.
Attendance:
ALL day attendance is so important for our students' learning and success. Students that arrive tardy miss out on important information and directions for their day, along with instruction and learning. Tardy students also disrupt the learning of others as they attempt to get settled in and catch up on the task that they are entering on. A day surrounded by consistency, routine and structure is the environment that students learn best in. A student is considered ABSENT when they arrive after 9:08 AM. Remember, that after a student is absent 12% of the instructional days of the school year, they are considered truant. Appropriate actions by the school will be taken when a student is truant.
November Lunch Menu is attached below!

The Guidance Center at Chapman: Everyone should have received a letter about the Guidance Center this week. You only need to sign and return the letter if you do NOT want your student to participate in any groups with the Guidance Center. Some examples of groups would be learning about bullying and being an upstander, social skill groups, social-emotional awareness etc. We feel very grateful to be able to have the Guidance Center as part of our learning community. Learn more about how the Guidance Center can assist your student and family at school and through outside resources at the November PTO meeting this Tuesday at 6 PM!
Crossing Guard Needed: We need a crossing guard at Chapman. This is a paid position through Edustaff. You will be a rock star by safely crossing our students before and after school. Its easy and fun! Please contact the board office or Chapman for more information.
Lunch Monitors Needed: After being a crossing guard, you can also be a lunch monitor! This is also a paid position through Chartwells. You can call Chapman or Gibraltar Food Service for more information.
Carpool: Our carpool line in the morning can still get better and more efficient. Please pull as far as possible up in the lane. Students should exit from curbside/passenger side only for safety purposes. Please be patient and do not pass on the left- we have two crosswalks and we do not want anyone hurt. Also, DO NOT move the orange cones (or drive over them) before or after school. They are there for safety purposes as well. Thank you for all of your help and patience.

Other Important Information
Attendance Calls: When your child is absent or tardy and you leave a voicemail on the attendance line you may still get an automated call home. Please know that your voicemail will be entered into the system as soon as possible. However, due to the busyness of the office, sometimes those messages are not able to be entered into the system before the 9:30 call home is made. You do not need to call back to report a second time if you have already reported the absence/tardy. We apologize for any inconvenience.
October Lunch Menu: Please see below for the updated lunch menu for October!
Q-Communications: Please make sure that all of your information (phone number and email address) are updated in Mi-Star. We now have the availability to send you information via text. I hope this will speed up getting important information to you! Also, please check your email Spam to make sure that my emails to you are not in there. Once you move them to your inbox, your email should recognize that it is an important email sender.
Doors will open at Chapman every morning at 8:25 AM. If your child eats breakfast at school, please have them at school at this time so they have ample time to eat and they don't miss instruction time.
School and instruction time begins promptly at 8:38 AM. Dismissal is at 3:43. Kindergartner students will be released out the back classroom doors. Parents can pick up on the playground by the basketball hoops. First and Second grade will be released out the main entrance. Third through fifth grade will be released at the entrance to the left of the main entrance.
Lunch times have been adjusted for some grade levels. See below for each grade level's recess and lunch times. This year we are scheduling recess before lunch. Research shows that students are more productive and successful in the afternoon if they eat lunch after recess. The September breakfast and lunch menu is also attached below.

4th 11:25-11:45 Recess/ 11:45- 12:05 Lunch

Birthdays:
GSD's policy does not allow cupcakes/sweets for birthdays. We would love to celebrate your child's birthday with non-edible treats such as pencils or a book donation to the media center or classroom.Volunteer Forms and i-Chat Requirements:
All volunteers in the building will be required to fill out a volunteer form and the school will run an i-Chat check for safety and security purposes. You should find these forms in your first week packets from your teacher. My advice is to fill these out and turn them in as soon as possible. Remember ANY volunteer needs to fill these out. You can pick up extra copies in the office as needed. This requirement does include volunteering for classroom parties.
Continued Updates Throughout the Building:
We are not done! We still have some improvements coming to the building that will happen over the school year. It is very exciting to see the continued updates and improvements throughout the last year!
