Principal's Message
I hope that everyone had a good week.
It’s hard to believe that there are only 15 school days left in the year. We are encouraging all of our students to keep up the great pace to “finish strong.”
As I wrote last week, all students in grades 6-8 will take their End of Year I-Ready Reading and I-Ready Math assessments. These local assessments provide us with important data about student learning. Typically, these assessments have been administered in ELA and math classes. This has become problematic because students end up testing over the course of several days and their focus is broken each time they have to start and end testing. Additionally, students are missing math and ELA instruction over the course of 3-4 days. We want students to perform their best on our local assessments so that we have the most accurate data about student learning. The dates of the testing window for ELA and math have been changed to Monday, June 7 and Tuesday, June 8. Students cannot prepare or study for these assessments because they are a culmination of what has been learned throughout the year. They should get a good night’s rest and come to school ready to go. Thank you so much to all of you for supporting our students during this time.
Families of grade 8 students should review the slides below that contain updates regarding Moving Up Night scheduled for June 17. Since our mask policy has been updated per the superintendent, families may attend without wearing masks, but will need to socially distance by “family pods.” If guests cannot adequately distance, masks should be worn. We encourage families to bring their own folding chairs and join us on the field for this great event. We are so proud of what our students have accomplished this year we are eager to share with everyone. Also, additional activities that will take place during the school day are also being discussed.
Our virtual National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16 at 6:30 PM. Invitations will be emailed to students and families.
Please check out new information below under Community Updates regarding vaccine clinics, as well as an announcement from the Warren Prevention Coalition.
The next few weeks will be extremely busy and students should plan to be in school, either physically or virtually, everyday.
Have a great weekend,
Dennis Morrell

Rolling Out New Courses through EnrollRI
The recently-released Learning, Equity, & Accelerated Learning (LEAP) Task Force findings identified increased access summer learning as a top priority to help our students not only catch up on their learning after the pandemic but to get ahead. We don’t have a second to waste in our mission to accelerate learning across the state, so we got to work immediately, along with our local education leaders and community partners, to put together a major expansion of Rhode Island’s summer learning opportunities. Now it’s here: over 6,250 available seats across more than 350 courses are now available for families to browse and register for on EnrollRI.org.
These hundreds of free learning opportunities include summer enrichment classes, work-based learning programs, college credit courses, financial literacy education, and more. The courses are available to all Rhode Island students this summer, regardless of where they live or go to school. We’re grateful to the over 60 providers who will be working with us to offer courses, including our amazing community-based organizations, colleges and universities. We are especially glad to be joined by our local education agencies who have moved their courses into this system and are opening their doors to students from other communities in Rhode Island. I cannot wait to see our students statewide joining across geographic and cultural divides to learn together throughout the summer.
Families should get ready to sign up now! The classes are already live, and we are extending student registration for courses on EnrollRI until Friday, June 11 at 5:00 P.M. Students, families, and schools can find more details about EnrollRI, including registration guides in English and Spanish.
Our students deserve a high-quality education every month of the year, and this is a huge step forward in providing that. We’re looking forward to continuing to offer opportunities like this to our students throughout the year. Let’s get our students enrolled ASAP and make sure this summer’s program is a success!

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
KMS Vaccine Clinic *June 10th 3:30pm to 6:30pm*
Seeing students are still in the school for afterschool activities it is best to keep it to students and family members only.
- We can give 2nd dose for people who received their first dose elsewhere. ( must be at least 21 days in between and Phizer )
- We can also give the 1st dose for those who missed first clinic. They just need to know that we will not be providing the 2nd dose.
- The DOH looks at the registration list the day before and will provide enough vaccine accordingly.
Here is the link for the clinic if you need. https://www.vaccinateri.org/appointment/en/reg/4461605092

GirlsGetMath@ICERM
Brown University's Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) is seeking math-curious high school students to participate in its GirlsGetMath@ICERM program being held over a week this summer.
The 2021 program will be abbreviated and offered virtually due to the continuing limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you know any current 9th and 10th-grade girls who are interested in how computers and experimental mathematical thinking can help address society’s changing needs, are curious about the variety of career opportunities their mathematical abilities can lead to and want to work and learn with like-minded peers and mentors, then please share this program information with them.
(Virtual) GirlsGetMath@ICERM
August 16-20, 2021 (Daily 9 AM-12 PM)
The virtual program is free (enrollment will be limited to 20-25 accepted students)
Applications are now open. The deadline is May 31, 2021.
Please forward to your math-curious students and your math-teaching colleagues.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series
Rhode Island PBS Education Services is excited to announce the Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series! Presented in both English & Spanish, in collaboration with RI Kids Count, Massachusetts Strategies for Children and RI & MA SEIU Education and Support Fund, SSIC’s goal is to support parents, caregivers and community providers with FREE tools and resources from Sesame Street that help increase successful outcomes for children, both in school and in life. Participants receive a complimentary Sesame Street care package, along with a certificate for PD hours, approved by the Center for Early Learning Professionals.
This workshop is intended for adult caregivers, parents and guardians, not for participation by children. Please register for either our English or Spanish sessions. Project made possible with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB.)
Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring
Our names are Julia Hasseltine and Eli Weisbord and we are two RI high school students who recently created Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring (RIVT.) Our vision for RIVT is to organize and provide free one on one weekly tutoring sessions between high school tutors and younger students, giving older RI students an opportunity to share their knowledge. We hope to create a network of students of all ages around the state of Rhode Island. Tutoring in all of the general elementary level courses and many middle school classes will be offered at the program’s launch.
The two of us are extremely excited to share this project and we hope that the program continues to grow until we can ensure that no motivated student is left without the resources they need to thrive intellectually. Please pass this on to anyone whom you feel could benefit from this opportunity!
Free Tutoring Opportunity Launching with Schoolhouse.world
Schoolhouse.world is a new online platform from Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, that matches students around the world with free tutors. The tutors provide small-group math and SAT prep tutoring for students in grades 6-12, building on the Khan Academy curriculum. Rhode Island is one of two state-level partnerships offering this opportunity to students across the state. Registration is now live on the All Course Network (ACN) and students can sign up here on EnrollRI. There is no deadline for students to sign up (though schools will still need to approve their enrollment via the ACN), no cost to LEAs or students, and no requirement to participate. Please help us spread the word to your students, teachers, parents, and communities! More information on the partnership can be found here.
