Fifth Grade Adventure Camp
October 4-6, Davis 5th grade students will be provided the opportunity to participate in a 2 ½ day overnight outdoor educational experience at Collin County Adventure Camp. The financial commitment associated with this experience is $180 per student. The letter of intent is due today. Final payment for this experience is due Friday, September 22. These are hard deadlines, for final counts to allow for proper planning.
Cash, check, or credit card payments are accepted. A link to pay by credit card will be provided through RevTrak (links are provided below). All checks should be made payable to Davis Intermediate School. On the memo line of the check, please clearly write your child’s first and last name and Camp 5 2023.
On Tuesday, September 12, at 6:30 pm, an informational parent meeting will be held for the guardians of all students who will be attending camp. The meeting will be held in the Davis gym. Parents and guardians are not required to attend the meeting, but are strongly encouraged.
If you are interested in chaperoning this event, the cost per parent is $120. All chaperones must have a criminal background check completed and are expected to remain at camp for the duration of the event. On Tuesday, September 12, at 7:30 pm, an informational meeting will be held in the library for all Adventure Camp chaperones.
On the first day of camp, students will need to bring a sack lunch. If you would like to order a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please complete the form linked here.
General information about the Collin County Adventure Camp can be found by clicking here. If you have any questions, please send an email to Rachel Pakebusch at rachel.pakebusch@wylieisd.net.
BARK for Schools
A few weeks back, families should have received an email about Wylie ISD switching to BARK for Schools for online monitoring. As part of our services with BARK, there is a free parent portal, which allows parents to receive alerts if BARK detects potentially time-sensitive issues.
Last week, families received an email invitation from BARK inviting them to activate their parent portal account. We have since received several questions and developed an FAQ page to help address those questions. Wylie ISD is currently working on scheduling parent information meetings and will share those dates with families soon.
New Law - E-Cigarettes/Vaping & Wylie ISD Consequences
In the most recent legislative session, Texas lawmakers passed House Bill 114, which will require that students who sell, give, have, or use an e-cigarette or vape within 300 feet of school property be sent to a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP). The bill officially goes into effect September 1.
Over the summer, Wylie ISD worked with the Districtwide Educational Improvement Council (DWEIC) to create an alternative discipline route for first-time e-cigarette offenders (excluding THC/drug-related infractions) through the District of Innovation (DOI) plan. In August, the Board of Trustees approved the amended DOI plan. Under this plan, first violations will result in on-campus disciplinary actions, while subsequent offenses will lead to placement in DAEP. It’s important to note that first-time drug offenders will continue to have mandatory DAEP placement.
We value our partnership with families and strongly urge parents to engage in continuous dialogues regarding vaping and its detrimental consequences. Not only is vaping a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, but it also violates the law, which requires individuals to be at least 21 years old to purchase tobacco items, including e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and cigars. Additionally, research suggests that vaping negatively impacts health. We care about our students’ well-being and don’t want them to experience possible health consequences from vaping. We also want them in the classroom, focused on their learning, rather than facing in-school suspensions or DAEP placements.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Wylie ISD Student Services.
Wylie Way Day 9/13
Our first Wylie Way Day of the year will take place on Wednesday, September 13. Our campus theme for the day will be "Out of This World." Students are invited to wear space themed clothing. Space costumes are great, but no facemasks please. If students have a favorite space themed show such as Star Wars, they could dress as one of those characters. We look forward to sharing this day with our Marauders!
Ultimate Raider 5K/Fun Run
WEHS PTSA is hosting their first Ultimate Raider 5K/Fun Run in September. They would love for all of their Raider families and Future Raider families to join in for a morning of exercise and family fun.
Positive Office Referrals
Did you know that we have Positive Office Referrals at Davis? Teachers and staff members have the opportunity to "find the good" in students and submit a celebratory form in the students' honor. This is just one more way we work to #betheplus2 at Davis. Congratulations to our most recent recipients!
