True Love?

Helena's CD

Theme: Love is complicated

Throughout the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, Helena is constantly worrying about her looks and her relationship with Demetrius. They start out a couple, then Demetrius starts going head over heels for Hermia, pushing Helena away. However, about 3/4 of the way through, Lysander and Demetrius both start fawning on her, making her angry and confused. Love definitely is weird when being influenced by fairies.

Love Story: Taylor Swift

This song is for when Helena and Demetrius are in love, before Demetrius falls in love with Hermia. They would listen to it together, just maybe while hanging out. I picked this song because it is a bout romance, but I feel like it has an undertone of they are going to break up at some point, so it fits the context.

Someone that I used to know: Gotye (feat. Kimbra)

This song is for when Helena realizes that Demetrius doesn't love her anymore, but loves Hermia. She would listen to it while she was I guess still in shock about it, probably still before the play. I picked it because it talks about how someone betrayed the singer after they said that they loved the singer. I feel like this is exactly how Helena feels before the anger and sadness.

Monster: Imagine Dragons

I feel like Helen would be listening to this song in the beginning of the play or after/when she talks to Hermia about how much more beautiful she is than herself. I picked this song because it doesn't talk about just physical disfigurement, which Helena complains a lot about, but also emotional imperfections.

Paparazzi by Lady Gaga and You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift

These songs represent when Helena wants Demetrius to love her, but he won't. I picked them because they both are like a desperate cry to be loved again, but usually unsuccessfully, after they have been wronged in some way, like Helena has. They show that same need for something unattainable. She would listen to them after the breakup.

(Start Paparazzi at 2:32 for not weird scene)

(Actually it is all weird don't watch if you don't want to be weirded out/scarred)

I Don't Wanna Dance: Hey Monday

I picked this song because it seems like a desperate attempt to make someone go away, like they betrayed you, and a little bit mad and upset, like how I thought Helena felt after Lysander starts trying to make moves on her. This would have helped because it allows Helena to get out her rage, confusion, and other feelings.

Hot N Cold by Katy Perry

This song describes how frustrated Helena is at both Demetrius and Lysander, who both starts fawning over her, especially Demetrius, who has been kicking her and abusing her the entire night. I picked it because it shows an specially frustrated idea of someone changing their mind, mostly about love int he context.

Hook Me Up: The Veronicas

I think Helena would listen to this song when she feels that everyone is making fun of her and she is just done with her "friends." It would help her by again channeling her feelings, and maybe convincing her that she can move past it. I picked it because it seemed like a pissed off song, so it reflects Helena at that time.

First Flight Home: Jake Miller

When I picked this song, I wasn't really thinking about how Helena felt, but mostly how the couple felt. Demetrius has just been made to love her again by Oberon, and deep down I think Demetrius, if he knew about it, would be happy with the outcome as well. As a couple, I think they would play this song, not just Helena.

Collide by Jake Miller and Bradley Schneider's Yo-yo

After picking First Flight Home, I saw Collide, and Instantly knew that it would fit the last feelings of Helena in the end of Midsummer Night's Dream. It embodies the need to be with someone, and the beat and lyrics work to express the happiness. Helena would listen to this while she and Demetrius were again finally.

As a side note, I also included it for personal reasons. When I was at Camp Seagull, my counselor, Bradley, was a fantastic at off-string yo-yos. The song he played while he was doing it was Collide, and the joy that I saw in Bradley and that he instilled in us as we watched him almost matches up to that of love. A clip of him is also below.
