Masks Optional in Baltimore County Public Schools
Based on new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance masks are now optional in all Baltimore County Public Schools and facilities.
Please remember that this is a big change for all of us, and it will be important to show compassion and respect for each other, realizing that there are varying levels of comfort regarding mask-wearing in our community. It is our expectation that students and staff respect the decisions that each family or individual makes during this transition.

The Art Show is returning to Mays
There will be both virtual and in-person components. On March 24, 2022 the in-person Art Show will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Mays Chapel. Students with last names A-M may attend from 6:00 - 7:00. Last names N - Z may attend from 7:00 - 8:00. If your schedule necessitates the alternate time it is not a problem. It is hoped that the schedule will keep the number of people at a time smaller and safer.
The Virtual Art Show will be available March 15 - 24.
Framed artwork can be purchased for $26.00. A portion of this directly benefits the art department and your child's art education. Pre-purchasing the artwork is available and encouraged. Reproductions are also available in the event families would like more than one. The only option for payments is with credit/debit cards. The school is unable to accept cash or checks.
In addition to framed work there will be other art works on display. There will also be art activities in which to participate. Students enrolled in the school after January 31may not have work in the show due to the amount of time required to complete, prepare, and send.
Students will enter a 6-digit pin number onto a pin pad when obtaining a school lunch. The pin pad is the same device that was used prior to the pandemic and will better assist the Office Food and Nutrition with meal management. It will likely be familiar to some of our older students. No money is exchanged as lunch is still being provided AT NO COST to all students. Students will still be offered a NO COST Grab and Go Breakfast in the morning upon entry with no change to the process.
PTO Event - Save the Date - April 6th
Are you interested in helping Mays Chapel Elementary School PTO raise $9,000 for classroom resources, creation of an outdoor classroom, community outreach, teacher appreciation, Back-to-School Picnic, Trunk or Treat, Mays Days Spring Festival, Fifth Grade Farewell, and much more?
Would you like to be involved in a program that has successfully raised between $50.00 and $75.00 per participating student in public schools across the country? Would you be willing to give a minimal amount of time to help our school raise needed funds?
Race for Education is a jog-a-thon, which will involve our students walking and/or jogging around a designated area for one hour.
The success of Race for Education is based on our school’s Race for Education webpage address with potential sponsors by e-mail, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or by sending individuals a sponsor mailer. Potential sponsors may be family members, relatives, close friends, and neighbors. Don’t forget to include relatives and friends who live out of town and may not normally be able to contribute to other PTO fundraising efforts. Race for Education makes it easy for them to participate as well!
Our Race for Education will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
“Kickoff” information about Race for Education will be sent home with each student on Monday, March 7.
There are incentives and prizes to help promote the success of Race for Education, which encourage student & classroom participation (Stickers, MCES Spirit Items, Homework Passes, MCES Lanyards, Picnic Lunch, Activity/Book Basket, $25.00 Chick-Fil-A Gift Card, $25.00 Tutti Frutti Gift Card, and Water Bottles).
Race for Education is great fun for students, no hassle to parents, and will fully benefit our school’s educational program!
BCPS Haiku Poetry Contest
It’s that time of year when the thoughts of Baltimore County Public Schools’ students are expressed in the 5-7-5 syllable structure of haiku.
Entries for the annual BCPS Haiku Poetry Contest will be accepted from Monday, Feb. 28, through 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 18.
This year, BCPS students of all ages are asked to write haiku on the theme of "dream." A haiku is a Japanese poem that consists of three lines. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third line has five syllables. BCPS uses the How Many Syllables website to check syllable counts. Each student may enter only one haiku, and it must be an original poem. Students are encouraged to be creative in their use of imagery and vocabulary.
All haiku must be submitted using the 2022 Haiku Contest Form. A winning haiku will be chosen at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Winners will be announced in late-April and will receive prizes. As in prior years, the winning poems and additional selected haiku will be compiled into an online book with student artwork. Each school library will receive a print copy.

The Rotary Club of Hunt Valley 2021-22 Four-Way Test Contest.
The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do is used by Rotarians worldwide as a moral guide for both business and personal relationships, and ethical decision-making. Developed by Herbert J. Taylor in the 1930’s, it has stood the test of time. Especially given current national turmoil, we firmly believe that “character counts” and that children closely observe and follow the behaviors of adult role models in their lives.
There will be a first, second and third place winner in each grade, and prize money ($40 for first, $30 for second and $20 for third) will be awarded.
See PDF below for additional information.
