Read Aloud Book!

We've started a new read-aloud book, Wonder. If you haven't heard of it, it's about a boy named Auggie who was born with a facial abnormality. He is just entering 5th grade at a school for the first time and is very nervous about making friends and being accepted despite what he looks like. There's a lot of parallels to be made with our students, the experiences they've had at school previously, and how they sometimes feel like the "square peg in the round hole". It's a great book about empathy, understanding and friendship, and it can be a fantastic opportunity for discussion at home, too.

Also, there's a major motion-picture movie out in theaters soon that's based on the book if you're interested in connecting to the classroom!

Looking Forward to Next Week

  • Math: Continuing current units that will start to focus more on refining division. Some groups are also working on measurement.
  • Reading: We will continue our nonfiction unit!
  • Writing: Continuing to learn about personal and persuasive essays.
  • Science: We will be finish our waves unit, and will begin a PBL (Project-Based Learning unit) on Geography in the United States.
  • Enrichment: We are working on our 2nd Enrichment Project. Here's the link to the packet.
