LIVESTOCK OPPORTUNITIES
PASE Livestock Judging Contest Sun. Sept. 20
Check-in will begin at 7:00am that morning with the contest kicking off at 8:00am. As of now, the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest is still moving forward as planned so this contest is vital for us to qualify a team for the national level.
There will be multiple changes to this year's contest:
This will be a Senior Division Only contest. Each county will be limited to 5 contestants and only one coach and one other chaperone if needed. Everyone attending the contest will wear a mask and hand sanitizer stations will be present throughout the facility. Livestock classes will be arranged in a more spread-out fashion and UNL may implement a 2-round system for the placings portion of the contest. Youth will maintain at least 10-foot distancing from reasons takers during that portion of the competition.
State 4-H will not arrange a live awards ceremony on site. Awards will either be announced on facebook live or simply sent out by email. Awards will be mailed as well. State 4-H will not be providing any pencils, clipboards, paper, etc.. to the youth. Each team shall bring their own materials. State 4-H will only handout placing cards and contestant numbers in the team packets. UNL will not be providing lunch this year but plan to have the contest finished by 1-2pm.
If you would like to compete, please email Kylie (kylie.kinley@unl.edu) by Tues. Sept. 8 so she can register our team and figure out driving arrangements.
Free: Communicating with Farmers Under Stress Program Wednesday, September 2, 2020
Stress seems to be prevalent in the agriculture sector, with even more concerns arising due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many farmers and ranchers are facing financial problems and market uncertainties, along with challenges such as production risks, farm transfer issues, and more. When temporary stress turns into chronic stress, it can impact physical health and mental wellness.
Nebraska Extension, in partnership with Michigan State University Extension, presents a free online webinar, “Communicating with Farmers Under Stress”, Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, CDT. This workshop is beneficial for individuals who work with farmers and ranchers on a regular basis, such as bank lenders, ag suppliers, healthcare professionals, and anyone involved with the lives of farmers and ranchers.
Workshop Objectives include:
* Build awareness around potentially stressful conditions affecting some farmers and ranchers.
* Learn stress triggers, identify signs of stress, and review helpful techniques for responding.
* Learn techniques for identifying, approaching, and working with farmers who may not cope with stress effectively.
* Learn where to find additional help.
In addition to being helpful for working with farmers and ranchers, the workshop educates participants about managing stress in their own lives and teaches how stressors can affect physical health and relationships with family or coworkers.
