Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Program
HOBY is excited to kick off the 2020-2021 HOBY program year and develop another cohort of youth leaders that will give back to our communities through leadership and service.
What is HOBY?
Since 1958, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has provided transformative leadership development training that has positively impacted the lives of over 600,000 high school students in the U.S. and abroad. At HOBY, high school sophomores build their leadership potential through an inspiring three- or four-day Leadership Seminar based on three leadership perspectives: Personal, Group, and Societal. As many as 300 “ambassadors” from high schools across the state or country gather at their local HOBY State Leadership Seminar between April and June.
What would I do in the HOBY Leadership Seminar?
Students will spend 3–4 exciting days exploring leadership from an individual, group, and societal perspective while collaborating with students from throughout the state. Students return from HOBY with a new sense of self-awareness and an elevated confidence in their individual potential. They will be inspired to make a positive impact in their schools and communities and will be equipped with the leadership skills to enable action. They will:
- Experience life on a university campus, where HOBY Leadership Seminars are hosted
- Interact with local community leaders—from CEOs to business owners to doctors to media experts—through panels, presentations, and group discussions about real-world issues
- Participate in hands-on activities to explore and exercise leadership on personal and group levels
- Form diverse relationships with adult professionals, college-age mentors, and high school students from across the state with diverse leadership styles and backgrounds
- Conduct a community service project to put leadership-for-service skills into action
- Open opportunities for internships, mentorship programs, and other HOBY Ambassadors Connect benefits
- Be challenged to complete 100 hours of community service within the next year as a way to put their passion and newly built leadership skills into action
Who can join the State Leadership Seminar?
The Leadership Seminar is only for sophomores, so don’t miss out! Students should let their sophomore counselor know if they are interested in participating.
Where and when is the State Leadership Seminar?
These seminars will take place between April and June 2021 with plans for both in-person and virtual attendance as local conditions mandate.
