Reading, Writing and Word Study
What is happening in the Word Work part of your students ELA block?
The purpose of word study is for students to learn the regularities, patterns, and conventions needed to read and spell and develop increased knowledge of word- spellings and meanings. Finding out where students are in their spelling development should be the first step to creating a more effective word study time. Once this happens an instructional focus can be set for a differentiated word study time.
Are your writing scores low across the grades?
Looking at what the CC writing and CC language standards, claims and targets are is your first step for creating a writing improvement plan. Turning to look at what students are able to do in writing is the next step. Plans are unique to buildings, however many struggling writers need to become more fluent in the conventions of standard English. These skills should be taught in context and will help students with laboring so hard to write words, sentences and paragraphs.
Preschool Transition Strategies Component #7 from SIP
As you look at kindergarten entry data, kindergarten entry behavior and tally how many students had a preschool experience, a need surfaces to strengthen the transition plan into our elementary buildings. Next month I will be sharing more about the district's transition plan to provide guidance to buildings in developing their own plan to meet the needs of the districts' youngest students and their families. If we improve our process for transition the outcomes will be, better prepared students and possibly an increase in kindergarten enrollment.
Early Childhood Education Growth in FCS
Community Education Staff to support kindergarten
Dr. Tortorelli from MSU. The staff member will be able to service each kindergarten classroom four days a week for 30 minutes. Approximately four but no more than six students will receive this service in the classroom. Selection for this intervention is based on students with the lowest scores on the letter and sound identification task for fall GLEA-K. More information will be provided for you on Novemeber 8th.
