Content and Language Objectives
What are some advantages to writing both content and language objectives for students to hear and see?
There are many advantages to writing both content and language objectives for students to see and hear. Content and language objectives should always be stated orally, simply and in writing. Echevarria, Vogt, and Short (2008) stated that the more exposure students have and the more time students spend using academic language, the faster they develop language proficiency. Posting and discussing content and language objectives also helps students know what they are supposed to be learning and helps them check their progress towards mastering objectives.
How might written objectives affect teacher and student performance in the classroom?
Echevarria, Vogt, and Short (2008) argue that writing objectives may affect a teacher by brining more focus to planning and thinking. It may also help bring order to classroom procedures. Student performance can be enhanced by helping students evaluate wether or not they have achieved mastery of the objectives. MaryEllen Vogt (n.d.) states that using the standards in the SIOP lesson guides teachers in assessing students throughout the lesson to determine if they are grasping the concepts. Teachers should adjust and reteach their lessons and objectives if concepts are not being met.
