Mrs. Clark's Class

First Grade 2013-2014

November has been BUSY!

It's hard to believe that next week is Thanksgiving! Time flies in First grade because we have a lot of fun (all while working hard)! From Veterans Day to making connections in Reading, our month has been action packed. Here's a little snippet into what we've been working on:

Math: Even/Odd numbers, skip counting (counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s), fact families (recognizing that 3, 1, and 4 can make 3+1=4, 1+3=4, 4-3=1, 4-1=3)

Reading: Good readers read like they are talking (not ROBOTS)! Good readers make connections to the book to help them better understand.

Social Studies: Veterans Day--we learned what a veteran is and we made cards that were mailed to the "Holidays for Heroes" campaign; Thanksgiving--customs/traditions of different families, Thanksgiving of the past vs. Thanksgiving of the present

Writing: Making our writing "readable" and recognizing that we write for an audience; using "sparkle" words to add details and make our writing more interesting; writing our sight words in a "snap".

See? Busy, busy, busy! Here are a few pictures!

Junior Achievement Program

Every year, Rock Prairie First and Second grade participates in the "Junior Achievement" program. This program educates youth on business, economics, and succeeding in a global economy. Our JA program, Our Families, introduces students to entrepreneurship and how family members' jobs and businesses contribute to the well-being of the family. This program is led by volunteers from the community. We are lucky to have two volunteers from the Brazos County Sheriff's Department, one of which happens to be LaTonya Henderson, better known as Kevion Felder's mom! The kids really enjoyed our lesson and can't wait for the next visit.

Fun in Franklin!

We had a great time at the Franklin Drive Thru Safari. We made lots of new furry friends, learned about the animals, and got lots of hands-on interaction. This experience is also an inspiration for our next writing assignment! Click on the link below to see photos from our field trip!
