What We've Been Up to This Month
The book summary must include:
- theme
- main character(s)
- title
- author
- problem
- cliffhanger - don't give away the ending; end with a question to make someone interested to read the book
Some students decided to take it a step further and submit book recommendations to the Barrington Times Kids Corner. Some went home and created book trailers we for our summer reading recommendations website. Fourth grader Emma Mitnik created an incredible book trailer that is now being used by author Mark Parisi for his new hybrid Marty Pants.
Website Evaluation
- I can use critical-thinking skills to evaluate websites for accuracy, credibility, and reliability.
We thought about deconstructing a media message using a critical eye:
Author Who created the message?
Format
.com -commercial site
.org - nonprofit organization
.gov - U.S. government site
.edu - educational institution
Audience Who is the site intended for?
Content What message is being sent?
Purpose To inform, persuade, or sell?We even took a short informal quiz to test our website evaluation knowledge.

Library Books Are Due
Our last day of book check outs is Friday, June 2nd. Believe it or not, I need that much time to wrangle back all of the overdue and missing books! All books are due back by Friday, June 16th. Students who return all of their books get the chance to enter the "Books Back" raffle generously supported by our PTO. Students can put their raffle ticket in one of five bags of their choice to win: a boogie board, a $15 gift card to An Unlikely Story bookstore, a $15 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods, a $10 gift card to Barrington Books, and a $10 gift card to The Daily Scoop.
We encourage our students to be responsible citizens. If a student has lost a book, please kindly purchase a new one to replace the missing book. At that point, students will get a raffle ticket.
