Goldfields: Women & Children

Introduction

4,023 women were on the goldfields during the goldrush period. Only 5% of women were single.There were about 3,000 to 4,000 children on the goldfieds. 8% of women were shopkeepers on the goldfields. A Woman's life was difficult because they had to clean and perform daily routines in much harsher conditions. They mostly came to the goldfields when their husbands found gold, women went to help by making food,clothes, sugar, jam and blankets.

Education

Children moved school frequently because their parents moved locations in search for gold.Moving to new locations also meant that schools were not establised. Children had to wait for an education because most parents could not educat their own children when they had no education of their own. Many children did not speak english and could not read or write. Some children received no education, these children had to work on the goldfields. Roles and Responsibilties of Women

Women had lots of Roles and Responsibiltes.The mintue their husbands found gold their children and mothers go to the golfields and sing,cook,dance,make clothes.Women and children took on alot of responsibilites on the goldfields by leaving home and going to the goldfields and also lots of women lost their husbands to the goldfields. Children took a risk of dying in the goldfields,children had to leave their friends and familys.

Women and children's health

Health on the goldfields was terrible for children and women.Lots of kids were getting illnesses and dialbies,children were sadly dying from these diseases because there were no hospitals in the goldfields it is not just like that could just make one and the adults did not have the right medicine or anything like that.They would be in danger if the adults gave them medicine becuase they may never know where it have been.
