The Gratz Weekly Scoop
January 16, 2017
Thought for the week: “The time is always right to do what is right.” —from Oberlin College Commencement speech, 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Teachers Resources:
I have shared this with many of you before when we have conferenced. It is one strategy, I have always found beneficial.
My Favorite No- assign students a warm up problem or two. Hand out index cards on which the students complete the problem(s), without putting their name on the cards. Collect the cards and quickly sort them into yes/no piles based on correctness of the answers. Teacher chooses his/her favorite "no" responses to analyze as a class to discuss misconceptions in the student work.
Two Roses and a Thorn/Two Stars and a Wish- I have seen several teachers use this in their rooms, but for those that have not heard.
Name two things that you liked about a chapter, lesson, etc. and one thing you did not like or you still have a question about. This can be used as a wrap up or an exit ticket. This is also a good strategy to use for peer assessment/feedback. Students can provide Two Stars and A Wish for a piece of writing, project or question when having reflection at the end of a lesson.

Attendance Matters! News from Mrs. David and Mrs. Seiner
Attendance Matters!
School attendance is essential to academic success, but too often students, parents and schools don't realize how quickly absences, excused or unexcused, can add up to academic trouble. This semester we are kicking off a competition to see which classes can lead in the attendance race! We will be recognizing the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes with the highest attendance percentage at mid-quarter and quarter and awarding winners with incentives. Please show your support for your student by helping him or her get to school on time each day. Attendance today equals success for years to come!
