Patriot Pulse
October 7th, 2022 Edition
Happy October! This is my favorite time of the year - sweatshirt season! I hope you and your families are also enjoying the crisp, fall weather and quality time together.
October is a very exciting time at Grissom. Students are now acclimated to middle school routines and focused on their studies. They continue to exhibit the qualities of a POSITIVE PATRIOT - respect for themselves, their peers, and their teachers; responsibility for their work and actions; and school spirit!
The end of the first quarter is approaching on October 28th. Be sure to frequently check in with your child about his or her academic progress and visit the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to see grade reports for each class.
Our softball and cross country teams just concluded very successful seasons. Congrats to all
student-athletes and coaches. Next up are our girls basketball and boys volleyball seasons. Check the school website for scheduled games, and come support our Patriots!
Our outstanding KSD 140 band program continues to impress! Just this past Wednesday, the Jazz Band just put on a fantastic show for friends and families. Our Cadet band will be performing at Grissom on October 26th. Come out and see them!
School clubs and activities are up and running. Our Student Council and NJHS are planning terrific service projects and school wide activities for our students' benefit. Please check our school announcements for updates on clubs and activities.
Lastly, Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 21st and 22nd. More information about times and the format for conferences will be sent to families in the very near future.
Read on for information about upcoming events and activities at Grissom! GO PATRIOTS!
Respectfully,
Mr. Michael Rumbaugh - Principal
National Walk & Roll to School Day
RE-SCHEDULED: Thursday, October 13th
Gather your family, put on your walking shoes or biking gear, and celebrate National Walk & Roll to School Day with us on Thursday, October 13, 2022!
D140 families are encouraged to walk or bike to school together using our Safe Routes to School guides:
The school with the most student participation will earn special recognition and school-wide popcorn day!
Our hope is that more students will choose to walk or bike to school on a regular basis.
For information regarding pedestrian and bike safety, please check out these tips from the Tinley Park Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
School Picture Re-Takes - October 18th
We will be offering picture re-takes for students who were absent on our original picture day or were unhappy with their original photos. Re-takes will be offered on Tuesday, October 18th during school hours. Those who ordered pictures on the original picture day and would like them re-taken must send the package of pictures they received to school with their child in order to have their picture re-taken.
Contact the Grissom office at (708)-429-3030 if you have any questions.
Arrival and Dismissal
Your continued patience and courtesy during our student arrival and dismissal is greatly appreciated!
One area of concern has been car riders being picked up at the intersection of 169th Street and 82nd Avenue. This is not a designated pick-up location according to our arrival and dismissal procedures. Please refrain from using this area as such.
Our dismissal generally takes 10-12 minutes from the 3:15 PM bell to complete. While we try to make drop off and pick up as efficient as possible, student safety is ALWAYS our first priority.
Detailed information about our arrival and dismissal procedures can be found by clicking this link.
Celebrate Unity Day!
Wear Orange on October 19th
When we stand together, no one stands alone!
Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange on Unity Day, Wednesday, October 19, to show they care about safe and supportive schools and communities. This is the day when everyone can come together and send one large ORANGE message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
KSD 140 Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

Student Support
Student support is open to any student who wants to complete schoolwork in a supervised, quiet setting.
Before-school support is offered Monday - Friday starting at 8:00 A.M. Students attending can be dropped off at Grissom's main entrance. Students will not be able to enter the building before 8:00 A.M.
After-school support is offered Monday - Thursday until 4:05 P.M. An activity bus is available to take regular bus riders home at that time, if needed.
After School Activity Bus
An after-school activity bus is available ONLY for students who are legal bus riders. Students who attend after-school activities that last no later than 4:05 P.M. can take the bus home. Students who want to ride the activity bus must sign up using the digital sign up form posted in every classroom at Grissom.
Lunch Drop Off
If you are dropping off a lunch for your child, please press the buzzer at the main entrance. The office staff will buzz you in, and you will leave the lunch on the shelf of the cart labeled with the correct grade level. PLEASE label the lunch bag and any other items with your child's name and grade level.
Fountain drinks are not permitted at lunch. Please do not include them with your child's lunch.
We prefer that the person dropping off the lunch be a parent or family member. If you must use a delivery service for delivering your child's lunch, please make the service can deliver the lunch on time and with your child's name labeled on the lunch. Too often, lunches are delivered after the scheduled lunch time and without any information for whom to give the lunch.
Reminder: Cell Phone Policy
Students are required to turn off their cell phones and put them away upon entering the building. Cell phones must be kept in the lockers until dismissal. Cell phones must remain turned off and out of sight until the students have exited the building.
Students who need to call home during the school day can do so by asking to use any phone in our classrooms or school office. Parents who need to contact their children can call the Grissom office at 708-429-3030 at any time during the school day.
