Language Arts
Students will continue to work on using “The Fab Four” comprehension strategies to help better understand and clarify Non-fiction texts. “The Fab Four” have students make predictions about the text, question what they read, clarify what might not be understood, and summarize the text. Students will also continue to work on building their reading stamina.
We will continue to work on our narrative writing unit. Students will focus on picking a small moment from their lives that is important to them and write a detailed story about it. They will explore strategies for generating, developing, and stretching ideas and use mentor texts to help strengthen their own writing.
The spelling patterns we will be focusing on this week will be words with long a and i. Students will work on spelling and reading words that contain the week’s letter pattern. Students will use their weekly spelling word list to explore word patterns in the classroom. The weekly spelling lists will help aid students in not only their writing of words but their ability to read them in texts. They will also help with sight words and irregular pattern words.
Make sure you are signing your students reading log and agenda each night. Students need to be reading 15 minutes (5 more than the beginning of the year) each night to build reading stamina and skills.
Social Studies
Over the next few weeks we will work to answer the unit's compelling question, "How can we as citizens use democratic skills, attitudes and values to help solve a problem in our school community?" We will focus on explaining what citizenship looks like in our school community, how perspective can change our point of view, and how we can demonstrate good citizenship and use attitudes, democratic skills, and values to solve problems.
7 Habits of Happy Kids
This week we’re focusing on Habit 1 during our Thursday Morning Meeting.
It teaches students to be in charge of their own lives, to take responsibility. Below you’ll find a checklist of the characteristics of someone who practices being proactive. While students are encouraged to use these characteristics at school, please reinforce them at home as well.
