Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
Student Showcase is this Friday
This one is a Whanau Group contest, so there are points to be had for everyone dressed up in their whanau colours - adults and siblings included!
Swim Safe
The Totara team were visited by Cecilie from Swim Safe NZ to teach water safety on Tuesday. Divyasri and Kemp have written some important information about what they learnt during the session.
Divyasri: You always have to be safe when you go in the water even if you know how to swim. For example you might be in a boat and you might be wearing a life jacket that is too big. It could slip off and you may drown. You need to wear a life jacket that is the right size for you - just like I am in the picture.
A lovely introduction to a story...
You may think I am a normal person but I am nowhere a normal person. My nails are like thorns. They can slice a tree in half. I have secrets that I will never tell you but I will tell you one story. It was the first time I got them..... my powers.

KAPA HAKA - PUANGA FESTIVAL
They have worked hard all year and on Thursday they stepped it up another notch. They represented our kura well and did us all proud, looking and sounding amazing and displaying our school values - Kia Kaha and Kia Miaia!
A huge thank you goes out to the army of helpers who turned up to help get our students ready and those teachers, parents and whanau that supported our students on the day.
Te Putake O Te RIRI - Wars and Conflicts in New Zealand
Guy Fawkes and Parihaka
In our classes on Wednesday, we challenged our students to think beyond Guy Fawkes, and pointed them towards acknowledging Parihaka. Please check out the links below to some videos:
- Here is a 5 minute video made by a teacher about Parihaka:

The Tech Hub
Kia ora everyone.
Week 4, term 3...I cant believe we are here already.
The students have now had 4 weeks in their new Design Tech groups, and progress has been made.
Most of the students in the soft materials classes have made a zip up pencil case, in some cases they have made 2!
The MicroBits class are about to start designing their own prototypes using the Micro:Bits to help with the Global Goals.
The inventors class has finished up making their machines to pop a balloon. Some of these were successful, others not so much! But we have had fun in the process of designing and making.
In a couple of weeks we are going to have a few weeks of Food Tech again. It will be nice to make some nice summery and healthy meals.
Attached is a recipe you might like to try. With summer coming, camping might be on the cards for some of us.
Grocery Raffle for SOMAD Community Evening
Grocery Raffle:
Food items, toiletries, Christmas treats
(No alcohol please and please no more baked beans - we have HEAPS already)
Business Baskets:
If your family or business would like to donate a basket of goodies to be raffled, that would be AMAZING!
Permission Slips and Adult Helpers
For these activities, permission slips are sent home which must be signed and returned. Without permission, we can't take kids on activities. We don't want anyone to miss out, so please don't forget to get signed forms back.
For some activities we need adults to go along with us - without adult helpers, we can't go. While it is mostly parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents and other adults are also welcome. So, if you are able to go along on some of our activities this term, why not volunteer to be one of our adult helpers. We would love to have you along!
Time to Pay your bills
