What is Google My Maps?
This is not just a GPS, Google My Maps allows anybody with a gmail account to be able to create maps of their own by putting markers down on a map! Teachers can use this tool to allow students to see different parts of the world, draw shapes, measure distances between destinations, personalize their map with different colors and icons, and embed videos and pictures to the places they have marked. When using Google My Maps in the classroom, teachers can put it on a projector and go through the map with the students or allow them to explore on their own.
Device and Tech Requirements
In order to use Google My Maps, you just need to make a Gmail account and all your maps will be saved in your drive! If you want others to see your map, all you need to do is share the file and give permission if they want to edit it. Google My Maps is free, however, you can upgrade to Google My Maps Pro for $5 a month for more features and accessibility. You can also download the app and work on your map through your Apple or Android device!
All your maps are saved in your Google Drive.
You can choose any location on a map to put a marker at and add pictures or videos and a description of the place.
You can also make routes and check distances between them.
Similar Apps and Tools
Because Google My Maps is connected with other google devices, you can upload your Google Spreadsheets into your own map! Another Google feature you can use is Google Earth. You can connect your map to Google Earth and you can get a virtual experience with your points on your map! Just remember that Google My Maps is used for looking at routes and distances on a map whereas Google Earth can be used for virtual close ups of locations. There is also Google Maps which is a GPS, so make sure when trying out these tools that you don't do the wrong tool. Google My Maps lets you plan routes and locations on a map whereas Google Maps will give you directions to a location.

How can you use Google My Maps in a Classroom?
- Teachers can read a book to the class and have the students map out the places the character went on their journey.
- Students can map migration patterns of animals throughout the year.
- Students can also map out expeditions that famous people traveled through such as Lewis and Clark.
- Teachers can use Google My Maps to create a scavenger hunt about different ecosystems around the world.
