Red Team Weekly Update
Week of 11/11-11/15
Breaking News
- We will be watching “The Martian” later next week in Science class. The movie is rated PG-13. You can read a parent guide here. There is a scene where the main character is seen from behind when he gets out of the shower. This scene will be filtered out of the movie. If you do not want your child to watch the movie, please email me (Mrs. Creath) and I will provide an alternative assignment.
- Starting next week, our team will begin our annual tradition of collecting donations for Hixson families in need for the holidays. If you are able/willing to donate cash or gift cards, please have your student turn it in to any teacher on our team. Thank you for your generosity!

The 28th Annual Webster Groves Holiday House Tour, sponsored by Hixson PTO, will take place on Sunday, December 8th from 11am to 4pm. This is the biggest fundraising event of the year and it takes many volunteers to make it successful! We have 6 beautiful homes and a holiday boutique that are opening their doors and we need LOTS of volunteers to work the event! The event time is 11am-4pm, and we have it split into 2 shifts. Please sign up using this link. If you have any questions about the event itself, please reach out to Teresa Herrell at tabrussel4975@yahoo.com or 314-607-0957. Thank you for your help and support!
- Save the Date for the Winter Mixer on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 6:30-8:00pm! The theme will be Snow Ball. There will be a DJ, open gym, and snacks available for purchase. No cost to attend with suggested $5+ donation for Webster Rock Hill Ministries.
Parents-If you and/or your spouse were active duty military, employed by the federal government or otherwise worked on federal property on 9/25/2019, we need your help! Additional federal funding is available to school districts when at least 3% of the student population is from homes with parents/guardians employed by the federal government or working on federal property. Please see the attachments below for more information!
Upcoming Due Dates
Classroom Happenings
ELA- Mr. Jones
We’ve started reading our non-fiction books and will begin meeting as book clubs next week. Students will need to make sure they are reading their independent books at home five to six nights a week. Most of all of their reading in class will be from their non-fiction books, with very little time dedicated to their independent books. They need to finish two independent books by the end of November. A graphic on our last two months of reading can be found here. My new November blog “Give. Thanks!” can be found here.
Science- Mrs. Creath
Students have been working on their Mission to Mars project. They are coming up with a problem related to going to or living on Mars, creating a solution, and building a 3D model of their solution. Their models are due Monday. Students can work on this project at home if they want.
We will be watching the movie, “The Martian” later in class next week. Students will be evaluating the solutions that the main character came up with in order to survive.
Social Studies- Mrs. Pettid
Students have been learning about Hinduism and Buddhism this week. We did two deep reading activities (non-fiction reading with MAP-like questions) and finished the week by creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two religions. Next week we will focus on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
The vocabulary test will be next Tuesday and I will also be doing a notebook check at that time. Students should have all of the notes on religion, as well as all of the Bellringers.
