Write the words Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How on different sides of a beach ball using a Sharpie. After reading a narrative, have students throw the beach ball around in small groups. Ask the student who catches the ball which word is closest to his/her right thumb, and to answer the questing regarding the text that was just read.
Activity 2: Question, React, Reflect
Use a three part graphic organizer to show model how students can record questions, reactions and reflections to bring meaning to a text. Have students record questions in the question column before, during, and after reading the text. As students are reading, have them record their reactions in the second column, or the reactions column. In the third column, students will reflect on the text and any remaining questions they may have about the text.
Activity 3: Act It Out!
Read a text aloud to the class. Discuss ways that the text could be performed as a drama. Divide students into groups and allow them freedom to create their own versions of the story line. Make sure to give students plenty of time to discuss, plan, and practice their interpretations of the texts. Encourage the students to use props and anything creative! Once they have practiced, have students perform for the class.
