Superintendent Robbie Owen's Weekly Video
What voters need to know on March 31.
Fact #2
Since 2008, Alabama has cut annual funding for students in Baldwin County by $1,128 per child.
That's nearly twice the reduction in neighboring Mississippi.
- The resulting $34.5 million loss to Baldwin County represents 10% of our annual budget.
- THIS is the reason the PENNY Sales Tax has been so critically important.
- It is also one of the reasons we have not been able to open a new school since 2009-10. Some of our local ad valorem revenues have been needed to cover operating costs previously addressed by state funds.
- Only long-term ad valorem revenue can be used to secure construction bonds.
- Currently, the PENNY is bringing in approximately $30 million/year that is funding 518 critically needed positions in the schools.
Go to buildbaldwinnow.com and learn the facts about school funding and needed facilities in Baldwin County.
Last week students were assessed on reading skills using the Istation program. All students should complete their Istation learning path per their March tier group to help develop their reading skills. This is done for homework weekly, but may be done in elective classes.

Get to Know Mrs.White
by Abby Glen and Julian White
Mrs.White is the 8th grade science teacher on Team A here at Daphne Middle School. She chose to teach science because she had been teaching chemistry in Tennessee and thought physical science was a good fit for her. She’s taught at a middle school and high school in Tennessee for about 10 years before joining the faculty at DMS! One of the things that makes her unique as a teacher is that she can explain things in a way students can understand better. Her academic expectation for her students are that they will be more independent, and she would also like to see them take more responsibility with their learning and behavior. She says that one of her biggest challenges from teaching is learning patience. In the next ten years, she sees herself retiring and enjoying her grandchildren. She was inspired to be a teacher by her mother, who was also a teacher; and she realized she could have summers and holidays to spend with her family. In her free time she likes to go out on a boat, fish, and watch movies. During the summer she likes to spend more time with her grandkids.

Is It Too Early To Think of Our Careers?
by Anna Glass
The 8th grade English Language Arts classes have been assigned a research paper. The main topic for this paper was careers they would most likely be interested in when they were older. The students figured out what career they might enjoy by taking a test on the Career Cruising website. After taking the test, a list of jobs that fit their interests popped up. Once they picked their job, they were ready to start the research paper. Teachers wanted them to keep up with note cards that contained facts about their job from the three sources they got them from. The three sources were: Career Cruising, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Alabama Virtual Library. After they completed their outline for their paper, students were shown the correct way to site their information in MLA format, and how to cite the source in the paper itself. They wrote their rough draft, and then added onto it for their final draft. “Even though I think it is too early to be thinking about our careers, I learned a lot throughout this project,” says Mary Crigler, one of Mrs. Madison’s students. Through this project, students learned what options they had for their future careers, and how they could work to achieve them.
