Yarbrough Elementary March Newsletter
From the Principal's Pen
As a parent of a 4th graders at YES, I know that learning about the school day can be difficult. When I ask, “How was your day?” I get the standard response of, “Good”. Developing open communication with your child is important now so they will want to talk with you in the future when something is troubling them. I hope these conversation starters help you begin talking at the dinner table or while riding in the car so you can learn about what is going on in your child’s life.
- What was the best thing that happened at school today?
- Tell me something that made you laugh today.
- If you could choose, who would you like to sit by in class? Why?
- Where is the coolest place at the school?
- Tell me a new word that you heard today.
- If I called your teacher tonight, what would she tell me about you?
- How did you help somebody today?
- How did somebody help you today?
- Tell me one thing that you learned today.
- When were you the happiest today?

Notes with Nurse Julia
Does your child get enough exercise?
Exercise:
Helps us sleep better
Helps us control our body fat
Builds stronger bones and muscles
Decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes
Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels
Helps us handle physical and emotional challenges
Not every child has to join a team or play sports to be fit. There are many activities children can participate in to get their exercise, including free play. The important thing is for activities to address the three elements of fitness: endurance, strength and flexibility.
Some activities that build endurance are running, bicycling, swimming, tennis, dance, and jump roping. Some activities that build strength are pushups, climbing, handstands, and use of playground equipment. Some activities that increase flexibility are gymnastics, yoga, and ballet.
Helping your child develop good exercise habits in childhood can set patterns that will last them into adulthood.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
In Guidance class we are finishing up with our career development lessons. Students have learned what a career is and the major factors in choosing a career in their future. Education is continuously being stressed and graduating high school is a must! Students are to be proactive as they get to choose how far they decide to go with their educational pursuit after high school. The sky is the limit; please challenge your students to give their best every day in school. The higher your expectations, the better results you will see.
Our 5th graders will be leading our school in our 2nd annual Career Fair in the near future. Please ask your 5th graders about the career they have chosen for this event.
Spring is around the corner and now is not the time to “quit” working in school. Parents please ask your students about their day and help hold them accountable for their schoolwork. Students also perform better when they get a good night’s sleep. Remember bed times are still important. It is also vital to monitor their use of electronic devices to ensure the safety of our children. Remember students must be in their classes by 7:30 a.m. so they are not counted as tardy.
Quote of the month:
The responsible person does his or her best on any task (even homework).
The responsible person completes the whole job, not just part of it.
Your best is the most you can expect of yourself.
Once a task has been started, you must be responsible enough to finish it (even if you don’t want to). Donna B. Forrest

3rd Grade:
The term “stick bomb” is used to describe a broad category of kinetic art. A stick bomb can be almost anything that is constructed from flat sticks that are woven together and held under pressure. When a key stick is removed, the entire structure flies apart. Designs range from simple, single-cell bombs that you can hold in your hand to massive chains and grids that are made of thousands of sticks. The goal of this activity is to provide a simple, safe and fun means of explaining kinetic and potential energy, as well as, problem solving and reasoning skills.
4th and 5th Grade:
The students will learn “Programming,” a course designed for elementary children. Through self-guided tutorials students will complete activities that require problem solving skills. My goal is to give every child the opportunity to learn computer science and reach students of all backgrounds and skill-level in ways that inspire them to keep learning.
Music Message with Mrs. Chenier
Music Inspires!
Music In Our Schools Month
Music In Our Schools Month® or “MIOSM®” is the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools. Fun and exciting activities have been planned for all music classes this month as we celebrate music and explore ways in which music can inspire us.
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
Prezi is a different way to do presentations. Technology is forever changing, and we are exploring other ways to present information. The students will be researching a certain topic and making their own Prezi in the computer lab. Students can access this website at home, as well, and show you what they know. Leader Lessons
During the month of March, we will focus on Habit 7, Sharpen The Saw.
Key Phrase: Balance Feels Best
What this habit looks like in action: I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others.
Yarbrough staff is focused on growing leaders one habit at a time!
