February 26, 2018
Dear Village Oaks Families,
Happy Monday! We all enjoyed returning from our mid-winter break and watching most of the snow melt away with the change in temperature. We have some fun things to look forward to later on this week. We will have an assembly for our students where we unveil our new school touchstone. During the assembly we will also get students excited for all of our March is reading month fun at VO...stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Alex

A Note From Mrs. Budlong
Dear Parents,
It's time for English learners in grades K-12 to begin taking the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs. All students who are required to be tested will take a reading, writing, listening, and speaking test from February 5 – March 23, 2017.
**If your child will be absent for an extended period during the testing window, please contact your child’s teacher to let them know your schedule as soon as possible.**
Please read the information sheet that came home with your recently. It has information about the test.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me. I look forward to seeing how much the students have improved this year!

Compassion in Action

Destination Imagination Competition
Twelve teams from across Novi competed in the Destination Imagination regional tournament this weekend. Three of those teams come from Village Oaks! The Novi teams performed very well at the tournament with 8 teams moving on to compete in the state tournament at MSU on April 14. Two of those teams come from VO!
Team Explosive Glowing Milk, with VO 4th graders Milovan Cosar, Pietro Domenico, Sophie Long, Aadya Mohapatra, Ivie Schira, and Ishaan Thurman won first place in the Engineering Challenge. Their super light 20 gram structure wowed the judges by withstanding 135lbs of dropped weight while their creative story about life inside a snow globe kept the audience laughing!
- Hailee Parikh and Christiana Vushaj, 4th graders, were 1st place finishers in their Fine Arts category sending a message about being kind to others using musical/theatrical skills with dramatic change in sets from different time periods. Their team also consisted of other NCSD students.
Team Curious Travelers placed 4th in their Scientific Challenge. The team was made up of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders: Sreethan Jakka, Sanjeev Vadivel,Tanisha Paul, Vincia Angelina, Vaghul Srivalaban, Nithin Mathanakumaran.
The team built a time machine to travel and explore different time periods. On their journey, they were shocked to see that future was totally affected by pollution and other means, so they came back to the present and promised to save Mother Nature!
Check out a few fun pictures from the event.

VO Flags
One of the things that makes our building so special is our diverse student population--we have families in our community who come from all over the world! To celebrate our global diversity we have hung flags in our cafeteria that represent many of the countries of our VO families. As a gift from our retirees from last year we were given ten flags of the following countries: Israel, India, England, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, South Korea, China, and USA. Thank you to our parents who have also donated the following flags: Poland, Singapore, Japan, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Nepal, Greece, Pakistan and Armenia. If you would like to purchase a flag of your country of origin or to represent one of the many nationalities of our school please visit Amazon and search for an ANLEY 3x5 flag: VO Flags
Before purchasing and donating the flag to our school’s collection please contact me or one of our secretaries with the flag information so we can make sure that another family has not already ordered the same flag.
