Social Work Corner
What is the difference between Tantrums and Meltdowns?
Similarities: Both might be expressed with shouting kicking, throwing, spitting, etc.
Differences between Tantrum and Meltdown
Meltdown:
Behavior doesn’t change upon audience reaction
Not aware of own safety
Not able to control own behavior
Not goal oriented
Longer duration, ends slowly
Tantrum:
Behavior changes upon audience reaction
Aware of own safety
Able to control own behavior
Goal oriented
It ends as soon as goal is achieved
Take into consideration:
When a child engages in negative behavior, avoid BIG reaction, such as “NO! That’s NOT okay!” or a big punishment. By giving a huge reaction you’re accidentally fueling the behavior.
** Remember anything you give your attention to, even negative attention is what you’ll see more of. **
Sincerely,
Graves School Social Workers
