Spotlight: Using Technology with ELs
Teachers of English Learners (ELs) can use technology to promote growth in their students. Please know that these are merely suggestions and are not required or sponsored by KSDE.
Here is one that raised great interest at the 2019 TESOL Conference:
Learn English with TED Talks is a supplemental resource for students enrolled in English language learning programs. This video-based language learning app helps learners understand and discuss powerful ideas from TED Talks.
Learn English with TED Talks is a language learning app that brings powerful ideas to life in the classroom.
In the app, students have access to forty TED Talks that have been carefully selected for language learning at four fluency levels, and that are supported with comprehension and practice activities.
For instructors, classroom resources including lesson plans and a Classroom Presentation Tool make it easy to integrate Learn English with TED Talks into any classroom and curriculum.

Spotlight: Strategies for ELs
This month's strategies were inspired by an article posted on the Teaching Channel, Why Are Academic Discussions are so important for ELL Students?
Cooperative Learning Activities adapted for ELs via TESOL.org- "Teaching EFL can be challenging when student engagement is lacking due to high teacher talk, scripted curriculum, or lack of interest. Fortunately, cooperative learning structures give students the engagement they desire while making the classroom student-centered and exciting. "
Think-Write-Pair-Share/ Think- Draw-Pair-Share- In this version, students are asked to think about a particular topic or question and write or draw their ideas. They then turn and talk with a partner about what was written. Finally, they share with the whole group.
