Contentment vs covetousness
“The fear of the LORD leads to life;
then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” (Proverbs 19:23)
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
(1 Timothy 6:6-8)
Early on in the Bible we read of the dangers of covetousness and the joys of contentment! The Ten Commandments state, “Thou shall not covet . . .” (Exodus 20:17). The Apostle Paul wrote that he had “learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” (Philippians 4:12). So what’s the secret to contentment?
The secret to contentment is . . .
- God’s purposes over possessions — Paul had come to realize that participating in the purposes of God was much more fulfilling than accumulating earthly possessions. If you struggle with contentment, re-focus your life on God’s purposes rather than your own.
- People over possessions — It’s easy to get focused on earthly possessions. Jesus taught us “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19-20) If you want to store up heavenly treasure begin to focus on the people God has placed in your life and ask, “How can I serve them?”, “How can I help them become successful?”
- God’s provision over possessions — Sometimes in life we can feel as if God doesn’t care about us or he doesn’t understand our needs. the Bible teaches us the opposite—God does care and He knows how to take care of us. A big part of being content is trusting God to provide for us (Romans 8:28).
