BCIT MEDFORD NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Fall is upon us as we look to wrap up the first marking period. There have been several fun and important events that have taken place during the month of October. The entire school body was part of an Anti-Bullying presentation that was coordinated by our HIB Specialist, Mr. Pensabene. This presentation educated our students on different strategies for identifying and coping with different issues related to bullying.
BCIT Medford once again opened our doors to future students as our annual Discovery Night went out without a hitch. If you have any questions regarding the admissions process please visit the district webpage under Admissions.
The fall Fashion Show was a hit again, this year as over 300 students watched this student driven show that showcased Medford students. Our students will have the opportunity to participate and view our annual Mr. BCIT in November before we head into the Thanksgiving Holiday break.
All new BCIT students were placed in their CTE on November 16th. Students received a certificate in homeroom which identified thier final placement. If you have any questions regarding your son or daughter's placement, please contact the guidance department.
As you can see there is always a lot going on at BCIT Medford. Please encourage your children to get involved and find a club or activity that will make their high school experience at BCIT memorable!!!
The Exploratory process ended on Tuesday, November 14th. All ninth grade and tenth grade re-exploring students were placed in their permanent career majors beginning on Wednesday, November 15th. Students were placed based on their grades within their Exploratory courses as well as their order of choices.
PARCC assessments require students to solve problems using mathematical reasoning and to be able to model mathematical principles. In English Language Arts (ELA), students will be required to closely read multiple passages and to write essay responses in literary analysis, research tasks and narrative tasks. The assessments will also provide teachers information on student progress to inform instruction and provide targeted student support. We will be administering the PARCC assessment for all Semester 1 English classes on 12/19/16, 12/20/16, and 12/21/16 and all Semester 1 Math classes on 1/4/17, 1/5/17, and 1/6/17.
We will be administering the ASVAB on Wednesday, December 6th for any interested Juniors and Seniors. The scores are based on four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge which count towards the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. This score can be used for current seniors still in need of fulfilling a high school graduation requirement as well as interest into the military.
Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified you are for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve your chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus you want.

In Their Words: Why Business Leaders Support CTE, Career Pathways and Career Academies
Business partnerships are critical to the success of delivering high-quality Career Technical Education (CTE) programs of study, yet building and sustaining meaningful partnerships remains one of the biggest challenges faced by state and local CTE leaders.
Advance CTE and Ford Next Generation Learning partnered to host two roundtables with employers, big and small, who are deeply involved in CTE in their communities, to learn more about why and how employers can support and strengthen CTE programs. Nashville and Pinellas County, the two roundtable sites, are recognized by Ford Next General Learning as model communities for a reason. Both of their efforts are built on strong and comprehensive strategies co-developed and co-owned across sectors, with incredible and sustained business involvement.
Drawing on these roundtables and the voices and perspectives of the participating business leaders, this brief offers successful strategies and recommendations for other communities as they consider their own employer engagement and recruitment strategies.

The term “Table Top Game” refers to any game that requires a flat surface, like a table, to be played. This includes, but is not limited to board games, card games, tile games, role-playing games, and strategy games. Some of the games that students have expressed interest in are Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Betrayal on the House on the Hill, Munchkin, Pandemic, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness. The members of the Tabletop Game Club will be honing important life skills like creativity, strategic thinking, math skills, critical thinking skills, problem solving/reasoning skills, and social skills.
