Health and Wellness: Power Up with Protein!
The beginning of the school year is a wonderful time to make changes to our plate. We all need protein - it is a nutrient our body needs to grow and repair cells, muscles and bones. It is also used as an energy source. Per the USDA, most people ages 9 and older, should eat 5 to 7 ounces of protein foods each day depending on overall calorie needs.
As well as cheese, eggs, lean cuts of meat, chicken and seafood - choose plant proteins more often. Try delicious options such as: beans (pinto, kidney, black, lentil, garbanzo), peas, nuts, seeds and soy products (tofu, veggie burgers). They are lower in saturated fat and a good source of fiber. For snacks consider unsalted nuts, seeds or edamame which are soybeans. Begin by starting your morning with an energizing breakfast of sauteed tofu, cheese, spinach, garlic, onion and enjoy!
