Principal's corner
Parents,
Here we are ready for spring! I hope your children have appreciated all the events and celebrity readers that we have had in our building for Dr. Seuss week. That week's focus on reading and the importance of it throughout life has made an impact on many of our young learners. Just hearing from an adult about reading and how important it is for them causes our students to pause and realize that learning to read fluently will matter throughout life.
Learning can be frustrating and dealing with an irritated child can really test us all. To survive in tomorrow's complex world, they need to practice solving problems. Below are some suggestions and a process for teaching just that from Love and Logic
Step 1: Provide a strong and sincere dose of empathy.
Empathy allows your child to stay calm enough to solve the problem... and learn from it. Experiment with saying something like:
"Oh no. This is a problem. I bet that's really upsetting. "
Step 2: Hand the problem back.
After you have proven that you care, ask:
"What do you think you might do to solve this problem?"
Don't be shocked if your child mumbles, "I don't know."
Step 3: Ask permission to share what “some kids” have tried.
Avoid giving suggestions until you have asked:
"Would you like to hear what some other kids have tried?"
Step 4: Provide two or three alternatives for solving the problem.
Remember to avoid resistance by saying:
"Some Kids decide to ______________________________________. "
How would that work for you?
Step 5: Allow the child to solve or not to solve the problem.
Resist the urge to tell your child which alternative to pick.
End your conversation by showing faith in your child:
As most of you know by now, my favorite quote is "Parenting is not for sissies!" In our Jefferson Library, we have CD's and books on parenting with "Love and Logic" Please feel free to stop by our library and check these out from our fantastic librarian Ms. Rhoades.
Nutrition Information
“Go Further with Food” is the message for this year’s National Nutrition Month celebrated during the month of March. Making healthy food choices throughout the day can help students concentrate better on school work, have more energy for after-school activities, and generally make them feel better! Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.
Three basic guidelines according the the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics are:
#1 Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products
#2 Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts
#3 Minimize saturated fats, trans fats, salt (sodium), and added sugars.
By just keeping these 3 guidelines in mind, Americans will be well on their way to optimal health.
Locally, the Boise School District Food & Nutrition Department is celebrating National Nutrition Month with special events. On March 2nd, we will served Green Egg Pops at all elementary sites in honor of Dr. Seuss Day. We also offered a new flavor station to allow students the option to season their eggs with a variety of flavors!
During National School Breakfast Week (March 5th-9th), all grade levels will be participating in the School Nutrition Association’s Campaign, “I Heart School Breakfast.” We welcome students to try new breakfast items offered during this week; participants will be eligible for some fantastic prizes!

Parking Lot Reminders
If you drop off or pick up your child at school, you may do so on either side of Latah Street since we have a cross walk light in the front that has helpers to cross.
We have students helping out at the exit and entrance so please do not yell or honk your horn at them. They are only there to help with the bus and daycare van entrance/exit. Let's show them the same respect and courtesy as we would expect from them.
Thank you for your help.
Attendance Reminders
If they will be gone for an appointment at anytime, please send them back to school with a doctor note. This could be for anything such as dentist, orthodontics, doctor, hospital, counselor..... All offices will give you a school note and you just send that back with your student when they return to school.
