PHS has the homecoming spirit!
Showing what students know at the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences
As you prepare for PTC next week reflect on communicating the following to parents:
- Their child's strengths related to academic learning factors
- Their child's strengths related to non-academic factors (team work, citizenship, work completion, attendance, etc.)
- Goals for their child in school, your classroom, and preparing for the future (next grade, next quarter, next year, college/career, etc.)
- Growth opportunities...Sometimes it is helpful to think in terms of "Here are the items they haven't learned YET"...the "Not yet" learning needs are great goal drivers for students and parents and shows that the future is full of hope and the expectation that the learning will occur maybe it just hasn't occurred YET!
- "Not YET" can also help teachers and students as they discuss non-academic factors that need improvement...talking about weaknesses in a "Not YET" climate holds high expectations that students WILL get there with your support and parent support
- Leading researchers have stated that phrasing conversations around these three questions can set students (and parents) up for success: "Where AM I now?"; "Where AM I going?"; and "How will I get there?"
- Remember this phrase...."Parents (students) don't care how much you know until they KNOW how much you care." Make PTC start with how much you care about their child!
Form that partnership with your parents and ask for advice about how "best" their child learns.
Check out the videos below if you want/need some additional ideas regarding hosting effective Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Things we should say more often...#9---You are so awesome!

Science teachers in grades 6, 7, and 8 are currently piloting a new resource. Ms. Carter, 8th Grade Science Teacher, Riverbend, has students actively engaged in a jigsaw activity using the new pilot resource. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket to check for student understanding. The exit ticket, pictured below, is being administered through Google Docs on student assigned 1:1 devices.
