Hoboken High School Weekly Update
#redwingway
This coming week we are offering Pfizer vaccinations at HHS for students 16 years or older. I have received great response, and I have more appointments available. It is not too late. If you are interested, please reach out to me over the weekend, or Monday morning and I will schedule your child. I can be reached at robin.piccapietra@hoboken.k12.nj.us.
As you will see in this week's edition, a big congratulations goes out to Ms. Miller and her fabulous theater group for making history by being chosen to perform on the main stage at this year's International Thespians Competition. Hard work pays off, and they certainly have made us proud.
I also wanted to congratulate
Gina Cruz
Angelina Diaz
Samantha Pennington
Amanda Sanchez
Miranda Villalobos
as they were all accepted into the Girls Who Code - Virtual Summer Immersion Program!
These students will be participating in a computer science program and will work on creating projects that will make a positive impact in the community. This program will help prepare them for a career in technology. They will have an opportunity to build a network with other students as well as industry professionals. We could not be more proud of them for paving the way for future generations of female leaders in the STEM industry!
The last congratulations go out all the fabulous teachers at Hoboken High School. We celebrated with bagels and coffee and a few other treats over the course of the week, but it pales in comparison to the work they have all done this year. I am very honored to work with such an amazing group of educators, who always put the children first.
All the best,
Ms. Picc
Congratulations Ms. Miller and Troupe #7268
Congratulations to Hoboken High School's Troupe #7268 Thespian Team's production of She Kills Monsters. They were awarded a spot on the Main Stage at the Educational Theatre Association's International Thespian Festival in June. This is the first time in the 80 years of this festival that a New Jersey school has been named a Main Stage production. Only six schools from around the world receive this hono,r which makes our high school play the best of the best this year.
Ms. Miller would like to thank her incredibly talented production team: Dave Stasiak, Doug MacAulay, Britteny Schruefer, and alumni Aishah Tapia, as well as the cast:

World Day for Cultural Diversity
May 21st is identified by the United Nations as World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. On May 20th, the Hoboken Public Schools will partner with the Diversity Council from Kean University to highlight the importance of celebrating diversity, in educational institutions and the community at large. Diversity is a point of pride in our district and we want to highlight you. We are so proud of the diversity found within our school community. Every family is beautiful and unique and we would like you to email a family selfie to Dr. Pollins at tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us and Mr. Munoz at christopher.munoz@hobokenk12.nj.us by May 12th. Please save and send photos as a.jpeg or .png.
Our amazing students speak over 20 different languages! We would also like to celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development by creating a video representative of these languages. Please join us by recording “I love Hoboken” in your home language. Videos should be saved and sent as .MP4 or .mov format and sent to Dr. Pollins at tpollins@hoboken.k12.nj.us and Mr. Munoz at christopher.munoz@hoboken.k12.nj.us by May 12th.
Please save the date for this event that will take place on May 20th from 5:30-6:30 via zoom.

Mr. MacAulay's Video I & II
While the students have been covering the films, they created a comic book character based on the High School Redwing Mascot, called The Red Canary. The students organized the character's name and abilities, as they created a comic book script, in correct format. Each class had two panels and like a "Mad Lib" each class contributed elements to the story.
Students were also encouraged to submit drawings of the character, and all five classes voted on the best illustration concept. They then created a pre visualisation 3D model of each panel, giving us a visual idea of the comic book, similar to a storyboard.
Once we had the idea, Mr. MacAulay used Toon Boom to create our backgrounds and character illustrations. Students edited their panel art on Final Cut and created a Comic strip and an animated video of the comic strip.
The behind the scenes overview and the winning video (from five submissions) will be available next week.
Mr. McKenzie's Geometry Applications
GEOMETRY – Applications
Hands-on Trigonometry-
For the start of the 4th marking period, geometry classes have been diligently exploring the trigonometric ratios formed by right triangles. After learning about the sine, cosine and tangent functions, students began exploring using these functions by surveying several objects in and around HHS.
Working with a partner, students measured various tall objects in and around the Hoboken High School vicinity in order to indirectly measure their various heights. Using their cell phones with a common level app downloaded, students used their phones as a clinometer (used to measure angles of elevation and depression), recorded data, constructed the problem and answered their questions.
By exploring some practical usages of this important topic, students will be able to grasp a better understanding of the trigonometric functions and how they can be applied in a real-world context.
Culinary Arts
This week students in Culinary I presented their family recipe projects. Next week the students will make their recipes in class to share with their classmates. Some of the recipes included: Borscht, Tacos, Empanadas, Chicken and Rice, Fettuccine Alfredo, and plenty of more delicious recipes.

Teen Action Task Force (TAFT)
Ms. Mattera and the Hoboken High School’s very own Teen Action Task Force geared up and raised awareness on underage drinking and the consequences that can come from it. This campaign encouraged teens to take a closer look at the many risk factors associated with underage drinking. The Teen Action Task Force provided their peers with valuable information about parents hosting parties involving alcohol.
The TATF provided informative pamphlets entitled “Parents Who Host, Lose The Most” and “Don’t Be a Party to Teenage Drinking.” The pamphlet provides parents and students with accurate information about the health and safety risks associated with underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to minors. Underage drinking increases during celebratory times, such as homecoming, holidays, prom, graduation and even during the pandemic. The campaign encourages parents and the community to send a message that teen alcohol consumption is not acceptable. It is illegal, unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under age 21 to drink alcohol.
