NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
March 22, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Look at our new format! A big thank you to Juanita for all her work wrestling with the program we have been using and reaching out to other schools about their successes with other formats. We would love to hear your feedback about this change!
I’m sure you saw the email from district communication about our new bell times for next year. For 2019-2020 our school day will begin at 8:30 and end at 3:30. Buses will drop off at 8:15 and we will have recess supervision from 8:15-8:30. As of today, I don’t have a definitive answer about whether or not we can continue with our collaboration time on late start on Wednesdays. As soon as I learn more, I will let you know.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Jump Rope for Heart
We have concluded the American Heart Association (AHA) fundraiser and I want to thank all the students, families and friends that contributed to this great cause through the Kids Heart Challenge. Forty-four students raised an amazing $2,325. Way to go NES! I have put in the order for the remaining thank you gifts for student participants and they should arrive in about 4-6 weeks.
Did you know that cardiovascular diseases affect nearly half of all American adults according to statistics? If you would like to learn more about how to create a more heart-healthy lifestyle for young and old alike, check out the American Heart Association's robust website (www.heart.org) that is full of information and ideas. Learn about diet, exercise, and prevention to take care of your heart!
Thanks again,
Simone Smead, NES PE
From the Art Room
Dear NES Families,
I’d like to thank you for all of your continued support with the art program this year. It was nice to see so many families at STEAM Night, Art and Science Fair. I know and I understand that going to evening events can be challenging. So, ”Thank you”.
The BVSD K-8 Art Show is a district-wide art show held at the Boulder Public Library. This year the exhibit runs from April 5 - April 28. It is a select show that only allows six pieces to be submitted. This year the following students’ artwork will be representing Nederland Elementary: Ciel Seaver, Cassin Rosenblum, Casey Hambourger, Corbin O’Rourke, Eliza Brundege, and Abigail Hess. Congratulations to these artists!!!!
Happy Spring Break!
Ms.B

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES ( March 18 -22, 2019)
Learning how to identify all your choices in any given situation is an important skill to foster in children. When we are stuck in our reptilian "lizard" brain, we merely react to our problems. We may fight for the one and only solution we can think of. We may run away in fear or we may feel hopeless about changing the situation. This week, students were encouraged to develop their "wizard brain" thinking while brainstorming tons of creative solutions to typical challenges they face.
They were inspired by Henry "Box" Brown, a slave in 1849 who came up with the unique idea of mailing himself to freedom. The creative genius of the students was sparked in various stem competitions and then applied to social problems they struggle with each week. Help your child practice "thinking outside the box." Help coach your child through the steps of creative problem-solving and resolving conflicts. Read more at Restorative Parenting in Nederland
