ELA
The Wallace 4th Graders have started their next novel, “Jim and Me”. A fantasy with non-fiction elements about two boys who travel back through time and meet the famous Jim Thorpe but are faced with many bumps along the way!
As part of our targeted learning instruction, this week the 4th graders have been working on poetry and the different elements of poetry. We focused on rhyme schemes after reading and dissecting different poems.
Fractions & Decimals
Our 4th grade students have continued to dive deeper into fractions and have now started decimals. Students are comparing decimals, writing fractions as decimals and decimals as fractions. We use decimals everyday while dealing with money, weight, length, etc. We will continue with fractions and decimals when we return from Spring Break.
We are on the road to the War of 1812. Students are reading about the meaning of the War of 1812. Students will be able to describe the major players, causes and leaders of the War of 1812. As we continue to learn about the War of 1812, students will write about the war from different perspectives.
Fifth Grade
Although it is bittersweet to not be back onsite until April 19th, we are all excited to enjoy a much needed spring break. Our scholars have put forth tremendous effort already this marking period and they should be very impressed with all they have accomplished.
This week we have challenged our scholars to think critically about their knowledge of our two core disciplines, Mathematics and Language Arts. Using their data from the last LinkIt benchmark, scholars continued to build internal learning summaries by reflecting on their areas of growth and engaging in academic opportunities to practice/strengthen their skills.
In ELA we focused on deeply understanding the influences point of view has on a literary text and the contributions multimedia elements make to a reader's understanding. Scholars continued to analyze the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 through these lenses. Additionally, we closely read paired stimuli, such as a digital version of The Green Book, a podcast, and “The Children’s Hour” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, in conjunction with the novel to develop a better understanding of the time period and apply our learned skills.
As mathematicians scholars applied their understanding of multiplication, division, and fractions to solve complex word problems by writing equations and using computation and visual representation strategies.
In science our scholars explored the concept of gravity by analyzing patterns and interactions between Earth, the sun, and the stars. Then, as historians we evaluated the closure of the Civil War and developed our own opinions about how history is and/or should be told today. Scholars also began the Unit 3 Social Studies culminating performance task by planning the theme, location, and guest list for a “party” that will demonstrate their knowledge of the Civil War.
Have a spectacular Spring Break and we cannot wait to hear all about it during our remote week together, April 12th through April 16th!
