Panther Pause
20 years of Pride at Colleyville Heritage High School
1.13.17
Panthers,
It is a great time of year at CHHS. We have been through two quick weeks, and our kids are doing amazing things in the classroom. I look forward to what our kids will do this semester as they continue exploring the curriculum and in extracurricular activities. I am proud to announce that two of our band students have qualified for the highest honor a band student can get, and that is to be a member of the All-State Band. These students will get to participate in a band with students from all around the state, and it is truly a representation of the best musicians in the state of Texas. It is an exciting time for our student-athletes as well. Our soccer teams have started playing games, and will start district at the end of the month. The girls and boys basketball teams are in full swing in district play, and tonight we travel to renew the crosstown rivalry with our friends from GHS. It is a time we are full of PRIDE here at CHHS. Enjoy your three day weekend and GO PANTHERS!!

Student Voice
One of my favorite things about Colleyville Heritage is its unique ability to promote a culture of excellence. I am surrounded by motivated students and faculty who supplement my education by encouraging me to achieve excellence. It never ceases to amaze me how this school will procure any resources necessary to ensure the success of its students and promote a healthy learning environment.
This aura of excellence ultimately extends beyond the walls of the classroom and can be seen in the form of pride. I love how the school spirit at Colleyville Heritage is tangible, and how we are reminded every day that panther pride never dies. There is no shame at this school in having an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and there is no shame in feeling a passion for the activities we are a part of. These two attributes collectively produce exceptional students, athletes, musicians, and citizens who leave an indelible legacy in our community.

Lady Panther Soccer's Annual Allison Horn Memorial Showcase Tournament
The Lady Panthers Soccer Teams are hosting a soccer tournament Thursday January 12th through Saturday January 14th. Our team will play at 12PM on the 12th at CHHS, 12PM on the 13th at CHHS, and 11AM on the 14th at MPS. This is an opportunity for the school to come out and show the team their support. Also we have slots available for volunteers to work concessions or gates throughout the three days and earn volunteer hours. To volunteer contact Tracya65@verizon.net.
This is The Annual Allison Horn Memorial Showcase Tournament. We host it in dedication and memory of a former CHHS soccer player who played with CHHS from 1999-2003. During her time she earned all-district honors all four years and was name by The Dallas Morning News and the Ft Worth Star Telegram 's all area teams her junior and senior years. She was captain both Junior and senior year and was voted by her teammates as "most athletic." She had multiple offers and signed with Texas Tech to play soccer. Coming home from college during spring break she was killed in a car accident. We honor her and her dedication to our sport and to her life each year by hosting this tournament in her name.

Aim for Success, Inc., will present their nationally acclaimed program to the students and parents of Colleyville Heritage High School on Thursday, Feb 2 and Friday, Feb 3. The Aim For Success motivational programs have educated over two million teens, parents and educators across America during the past 18 years on topics such as abstinence education, drug prevention and anti-bullying.
The upcoming program called XTREME is for high school students only and addresses the problems of teen pregnancies and the escalating STD epidemic. This straight talk – in-your-face program will clearly demonstrate to the students that avoiding sexual activity until marriage provides freedom from pregnancies, STDs, and regret while giving them the freedom to fulfill their dreams and goals!
The Parent Program provides an opportunity for parents to also learn new information as they preview the student program. “This is a must see event for anyone concerned about the problems associated with teen sexual activity,” said Marilyn Morris, President of Aim For Success. Community guests are welcome to attend.
If you do not want your child attending this assembly, please fill-out the "Opt Out Form" found here, and either email it to Kevin.Starnes@gcisd.net or bring it to the front office. The deadline to turn in the "Opt Out Form" is Wednesday, February 1st.

ACCEPTED Wall
Exciting New Endeavor! CHHS PTSA is collaborating with CHHS AVID to create a space on our campus that will showcase the accomplishments of our CHHS seniors and where they have been accepted to college. It will be called an ACCEPTED Wall. The purpose of the ACCEPTED Wall is to highlight exceptional college campuses all over the United States and beyond, and to start a conversation about how and why to choose a school of higher learning.
Here is how students and parents can help:
1. We would like pennants from colleges that you visit. While you are on a tour, pick up a pennant to donate. They can be dropped at the CHHS office beginning Tuesday, January 17th .
2. When you receive acceptance confirmation and decide on a college, scan your letter and send it Dawn Treese at dawn@treese.org. These will be framed and hung on the ACCEPTED Wall.

2017-2018 GCISD Calendar
Many of you have asked about the 2017-2018 school calendar, so I wanted to provide you a brief update on its status. On Thursday, January 12, the district included in The LEADer, the district's e-newsletter, a link to a brief survey that asks four questions regarding the student-teacher calendar. In case you missed it, I have included a link to the survey in this email. These questions will help us determine what is most important for our parents, teachers, students, and community members. The survey will be open until 4 p.m. on Friday, January 20. Once the district has collected the information, a proposed calendar will be recommended to the District Excellence Committee prior to the Board of Trustees vote on Monday, February 27. We are working diligently to finalize the 2017-2018 school calendar and we appreciate your patience as we work to create the best calendar to cultivate student success.

Advanced Placement exams
Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Colleyville Heritage HS desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount on tuition.
For the 2017 AP exams, students at Colleyville Heritage HS will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access.
This year each AP exam costs $97.00. This cost is slightly higher than some neighboring schools due to online registration. Colleyville Heritage HS desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Robert Sikora, Robert.Sikora@gcisd.net, in the Colleyville Heritage High School to learn more.
Online Exam registration will begin on Tue, Jan 3, 2017 at 8:00 AM and end on Sun, Feb 12, 2017 at 11:00 PM. In order to register, students should click on the link provide on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/441408 to register .To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.
Colleyville Heritage HS is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. Paying online is a great way to make sure that payment has been made while avoiding mailing payment.
Here are the important dates for the registration process:
- Tue, Jan 3, 2017 at 8:00 AM - Registration Begins
- Sun, Feb 12, 2017 at 11:00 PM - Registration Ends
- Wed, Feb 15, 2017 at 11:00 PM - Registrations that have not been paid for will be cancelled and exams will not be ordered.
Please contact Robert Sikora, Robert.Sikora@gcisd.net , if you would like to register for an exam not listed or have any questions.
DECEMBER VOLUNTEER HOURS
It’s time to submit the number of adult volunteer hours you volunteered in DECEMBER for any CHHS organization. PTSA collects the number of volunteer hours, so that GCISD can use them for applying for grants and other uses. This is only parent hours, not students’ Community Scholar hours (see CSAP program guidelines on the Counseling website about that). Submit your hours in 2 minutes at the link found here.
CHHS PTSA
CHHS PTSA is updating our bylaws and standing rules. The changes to both documents can be found at http://www.chhsptsa.org. A summary of the changes are listed below. These changes will be voted on at the February general meeting. Please email Leslie Williams at parliamentarian@chhsptsa.org with any questions. Standing Rules 1. Change Board of Education/Legislative Liaison to ADVOCACY. (Strictly a title change--to put us more in alignment with what they are calling this position at council and state level) 2. Change "duties of vice presidents" to ADDITIONAL DUTIES OF OFFICERS, ADD Treasurer: Shall be in charge of developing and maintaining the annual budget. Shall be responsible for all deposits and disbursements. All checks written will require two signatures. 3. Scholarships: Add line that indicates No graduating senior parents will be allowed to serve on this selection committee. Bylaws PRESIDENT-ELECT
NEW in 2016 is the option to add President-Elect to your bylaws. Should a PTA choose to amend their bylaws to add this officer, the position would be available for election in spring of 2017.
When a President-Elect is included as an officer, the term limits for both President and President-Elect are limited to one year meaning they can not be re-elected to the same position. The President-Elect would serve as an aide to the President and chair meetings in the president’s absence, could have other duties, and would then automatically become President the following year.
The first year of implementing this change, the nominating committee would need to slate a President and a President-Elect but for all future years, only the President-Elect would be elected. When the members elect a President-Elect, they are also electing their future President.
President-Elect holds the same privileges as President in that they are an ex-officio member of every committee except the Nominating Committee and the Financial Reconciliation Committee.
