USING YOUR IMC
AN EXTENSION OF YOUR CLASSROOM
Health classes learning about canine therapy
Illinois History Day Projects
Classes using databases to research digital citizenship topics
These are just a few recent examples of ways departments are using the IMC as an extension of their classrooms for research, exploration, creation, and collaboration. The IMC provides students with access to both print and electronic sources; research hotlists/pathfinders that are coordinated with classroom assignments/projects; and instruction on the information skills they will need as adults to live and work in an information-based society.
Why do my students need databases when they can use Google?
The enormous amount and quality of information on the Internet can make finding exactly what students need a very frustrating experience.
Research databases provide information that has been reviewed and edited by experts. Databases give your students access to reliable, updated reference content with full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites.
As you know anyone can publish information, ideas and opinions on the Internet regardless of their expertise. Results from a Google search may include incorrect information from unreliable sources.
Information in research databases is organized in a user-friendly format by source types and search results often include suggested related subjects and can help in narrowing students' topics. Citation information to create a bibliography is provided in the databases as well. I'd be more than happy to show you and your classes these valuable resources!

The Coffee Nook
Students are loving The Coffee Nook in the IMC! The Coffee Nook serves flavored coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate, and tea daily. This collaborative project with the VTAP program and the IMC was funded through a VTAP grant to create a mini business to incorporate transferrable skills VTAP students are learning in Vocations class as well as at their training sites. VTAP students complete a weekly inventory, counting the money, placing orders, stocking and setting up the stand each day. IMC student monitors serve the coffee and restock items throughout the day. Proceeds go toward purchasing items for the VTAP program as well as the IMC. Be sure to stop by!
